The Promise

concept ocean landscape dynamic sunset black and white photo painting 3d shadow chiaroscuro landscape landscape painting fantasy tower in water girl man patting on her back

For this painting I wanted to tell  some story between the two characters in the foreground and paint a ocean\sunset scene with some sort of stone structures protruding out of the water. I was surprised how quickly I was able to paint this. It took me about three hours to complete. I didn’t smudge this time to blend. Instead I used as soft round brush like a airbrush.  I enjoy value painting so much.  Let me know what you think 🙂

Update: Shrunk down the birds on the tower as they where too big. Lighted up the sides, made it too dark. Cleaned up the tower farthest in the distance

Created in Photoshop
Time Spent Painting: 3 hours.

  1. i was all “what an interesting landscape… wait, what is… oh my god, what is with that dude’s hand??” and then i was like a hundred times more interested. cool.

  2. Very cool. Quite creepy yet calming. I think it’d depend a lot on what mood you’re in when you see it. Before this I’d only seen your faces and dragon etc. characters so it’s cool to see something different.

I like that it’s the kind of thing you can get lost in for a little while coming up with your own story behind the picture. The thing that makes it disturbing (but interesting) for me is the guys hand. It looks quite monstrous.

On looking closer it seems like maybe the two characters are standing in profile, and I would have preferred them to be looking straight out without being able to see their faces at all. But it’s a minor complaint. Good work!

    1. thank you. I’m happy you liked the picture and came up with a story about it. that what I hope would happen if someone looked at it. I agree about the face. I probably would be better if the figures in front a little smaller as well. I’m still a bit new to concept art painting and I appreciated your feedback.

  3. Yes really like this one, I agree with andytallman101 it would depend on your mood, as to what you see in the picture 🙂
