Fierce Fire Beathing Dragon Portrait WIP (Daily Value Painting)

fierce dragon breathing fire wip daily value painting

I haven’t painted a dragon in a few days (I know, how did I ever survive :D) In this painting I was taking my time on the scales and other details. I wasn’t able to finish it in today, so I will work on it tomorrow. Let me know what you think of it so far. Painted in Photoshop.

Speaking of dragons. I’ve been been watching a bunch of movies lately since I now have a dual monitor setup on my computer, I can watch stuff while I’m drawing. It’s rather nice. I’ve missed a bunch of movies I haven’t seen yet.

I’ve seen one movie that featured a dragon. The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader

It was a major disappointment. (Note: here be spoilers) There is two major issues I have with the movie. First is the inclusion of the green mist and the quest to find the seven lords and their magical happy swords. It was not in the book. I understand the need for a villain in the movie as the book really doesn’t have a major one. The Second is Eustace, his character development is so limited in this movie. A main focus in the book is Eustace becoming a better person.

The most powerful chapters in the book is Eustace’s transformation into a dragon and his ‘un-dragoning’. The pain of being a ugly dragon makes him think about what he is inside and now he has a body to match. Then he changes into a better ‘person’ befriending the crew and helping them out. His un-dragoning is one of the most powerful parts in the book. THE FREAKING MOVIE CUTS ALL OF IT OUT!!!!!! In the movie they combine two islands together and Eustace simply becomes a dragon. A strange looking dragon that resembles an odd combination Draco and Jake Long.  No lesson, no character development, no becoming a better person, no helping and befriending the crew, nothing. Instead, dragon Eustace sheds a few tears and then unrealistically drags the entire ship to another isle with his tail wrapped around it. Dumb, dumb, dumb!

The un-dragoning scene is so heartless in the movie.  In the book, Eustace painfully takes off layers of his scaly skin with Aslan’s help and is reborn in a lake as a human. In the film, Aslan uses his magical fairy dust to change him back to a human while simultaneously warping him to Aslan’s table, allowing Eustace to put the final sword on the table, and making Edmund’s sword blue (there must be orcs around. RUN HOBBIT, RUN!) .  I’m kind of glad Walden Media’s license to make Narnia movies has expired. They wont butcher any more of them. Sorry if I was long winded.

One interesting thought occurred to me after posting: If the dragon treasure that turned Eustace into a dragon is simply cursed by the green mist. Why didn’t Edmund and Caspian X transform into dragons? Why wouldn’t the green mist take another go at them?
