Dragon Sketch (6-8-2013)

badass dragon head bust painting shooting fire epid angry hungry dragon man mad

Another rendering test. Painted it entity with just the soft round brush. I also added a faint noise texture. The round brush is not good for details, especially scales, the image still feels a bit ‘blurry’ to me. So its best to start out blocking with soft round and then switching to a harder brush like charcoal. I didn’t do any smudging as the soft round is pretty good at it’s name (being soft). Time spent 2hrs (1hr painting the image, and 1hr messing around with the colors : Painted in Photoshop. Any feedback is welcome.

  1. This is just..WOW! I love how the scales came out. I hope you do a tutorial on this. I draw dragons too but i can never make anything like this. D:

    1. Thank you so much. That means a a lot. I’m still experimenting with different ways to render details such as scales. I’m not yet a master. But I would be happy to make a tutorial on how I rendered the scales. I see if I have some time to do so in a few days.

    1. thanks so much πŸ˜€ It’s true about the blurriness. It’s because I used the soft round for everything in that painting. I need to try different brushes with the scales. I’m going to see if I can make some custom brushes πŸ˜€

  2. You are so humble…your work IS masterful! This dragon is not only an excellent rendering and, quite simply, “coooo-l,” but also evokes such a fierce mood. Love it!
