Still Life 9 – The Monster In My Glass

monster dino in glass or pure doom and hate and lust for doom

As strange as it looks. It IS a still life painting. For a school art project I was taking apart cheap $1 toys and then putting them back to together as a mash-up. Dr. Frankenstein would have been proud. One of my creations was a stegosaurus centaur. Unfortunately I messed up when gluing it and the poor thing fell apart. the only parts that stayed together (barley) was the neck/head and the torso. I thought it would be cool to use my florescent light as the only main lighting source. Well.. it over-saturated all the colors. This was extremely hard for me to paint because every color was at both a high saturation and value. I finally gave up and added a lower value blue.  I will only use the florescent light for fill lighting from now on.

Creature Feature 1- Nectoar

creature concept art test speedy monster eat hole shark dragagon

The story of the Nectoar : the nectoar is a stone creature that lives in the abandoned mountains. It is said that it’s voice could crush rock miles a way and that it’s stare could turn a person to stone! it has quick strong legs that can catch up to any thing in a instant! It’s thick helmet shaped head protects the brain. it’s only weak spot is it’s fleshly red underbelly and it is the only way you can slay a nectoar. It has a sensitive pod above it’s head it uses as a third eye.

After watching a very motivating video on creativity (I will search for link when I can). It made a point that stuck with me. If you want to do something, you must simply do it, sounds simple right? So why doesn’t it happen? There are some that want to be writers but they never write due to fears and other hangups. But a writer does one thing every day without letup…. they write! So if you want to be a writer, you must write! Doesn’t matter how good or bad your are, if you want to be something, you MUST be it. Every day. Without letup. People like to use the popular excuse ‘I have no talent to do that’. Talent is overrated. Hard work and passion for you subject gets you places. NOT talent. Some skills might take years to learn well, but if it is your passion, make yourself dredge through it! The more you do something the better you become at it. The more you love it.

I have done this with being a artist, every day I draw, paint, and teach myself. I still have a ways to go (what artist doesn’t?), but it doesn’t matter, it is my passion to draw and paint. In just the last 4 months you can see a clear improvement in my skills. However I realized if i want to become a concept artist.. shouldn’t I create concept art? I draw allot of dragons, critters and still life paintings but very few designs. I’ve decided that along with my still life project I should create a critter a day. No excuses. I started creating creatures four days ago, this is the first design that is not too shabby. I write a short story about a creature and them paint it. Unlike my Still life paintings I will not upload every creature I create because..frankly most suck right now :D. I also do some quick daily storyboards as well of story ideas the pass through my reptilian brain. I now set aside 2 hours a day for studies, its called my Art block.

I spent 2 hours on this painting.

Still Life 8 – Angry Bird USB stick is ‘Fowl’

angry birds realistic painting usb stick still life

I couldn’t think of a clever pun, unfortunately…wait a minute. Never mind 🙂 I’m not the biggest fan of the ‘flustered fowls’. I never really enjoyed the games, I found the physics too random. Getting three stars on all levels required just as much luck as skill. That didn’t stop me from buying Space, which is surprising decent. When it merged with Star Wars, and became a massive commercial Goliath (Angry Bird underwear..seriously?!). My spid-hipster sense started tingling and I never looked back at the ‘grumpy game’. My friend bought me this USB stick of the red bird because he though I loved the games :\. I used to use it often to transfer files from one location to another… and then I started to use Dropbox, and then the ‘frustrated fowl’ sat alone, collecting dust. I wanted to paint something spherical, It was there, so I painted it. Created from scratch in Photoshop using a Wacom tablet. 45 minutes. Now lets eat those eggs!

Dragon Bust Sketches

dragon art for sale custom orginal cheep
Dragon Postcard 05

I have created 5 dragon busts on recycled stock. When I was working in merchandizing one thing we would do is replace the soup can logos at the grocery stores. It’s didn’t matter if it was the  same logo as before, it would be replaced with the old one going in the trash. It was such as waste or money, something common with big corporations such as this. the opposite side of the stock was clean, thick, and glossy. It was perfect for markers.I couldn’t bear to waste good paper so I started to save them. I started to sketch dragons on the stock and give them to my friends and family. I was going to try to sell these but I couldn’t remove the soup logo and then I split india ink all over them. :_(

I plan on drawing some nice dragon sketches on nice stock paper with no soup logo. I figured out a way to set up PayPal to simply add a pay now button so I will be setting up a simple ‘shop’ page in the future.

Cicero the Zebra (Commission)

cicero

This is Cicero the Zebra. A commissioned painting. The painting was for a name badge. It was a fun commission. It’s much different then that dragons I have been painting. This is probably the most colors I’ve used in a portrait so far. I usually hold back using this much color in the piece because its quite tricky to pull it off, I think it did a good job a balancing it.

Still Life 7 – Light up the night

flashlight painting still life erre paint lihgt portrait

This still life was more of a challenge for me. It was a oddly shaped flash light. I didn’t set up the still life in my studio, so there is no fill lighting and whatnots. It just painted it on my friend’s kitchen table. Rendering the reflectivity in the glass was fun, but I didn’t get it a 100%, I will try another glass study such as this in the future. I spent about a hour painting this. I painted this from scratch in Photoshop using a wacom tablet.
