Katamari isn’t orginal after all.. (Daily Doodle 24)

katamari damacy wonderful end of the world

Alternate title : The Wonderful End of the World

When I play the Katamari series I feel like I am a dung beetle.. minus the dung part. For this piece I tried another rendering technique. I don’t think it worked for me this time, I will try it again. This is the last Katarmari fan art.. I promise.

Concept Doodles (Daily Doodle 22)

daily-doodle-22--characters-1-10-wo

Sorry for not posting last week. I will say it certainly was not one of my best weeks, and leave it at that.

Some concept doodles. Nothing special. I am trying a new method to attempt to get fresh ideas. Here is the process, sketch a character, then change a few things to the character into. Rinse and Repeat. Depending on what you change some times the character will look like it’s transforming. Other times it’s almost instant.

Katamari Damacy Comp Sketch (Daily Doodle 19, 20, 21)

The last three day of daily doodles. Each painting 30 minutes. I need to spend longer on these. One is a comp idea sketch of a video game called Katamari Damacy. I found it in a thrift store. This game is… strange. But strangely fun. What do you expect from Japan?

The story of this crazy video game is that the King of the Cosmos and his buddies get drunk and accidentally destroy all the stars in the sky. So he send his diminutive prince son to earth to pretend that he is a dung beetle, rolling a device called a katamari that makes objects, animals, and people get stuck to it (like a snowball effect),collecting and growing his giant ball of junk until the timer runs out. Then the king warps you back home with his rainbow breath (what my drawing is based off of), and takes the katamari FILLED WITH INNOCENT PEOPLE, and turns them into a star. Nice guy, that king…

The other doodles are not as nearly interesting so I wont talk about them.

Faux Movie Poster – Taurancaus

final-project-72dpi-6

I forgot to post this. It is a faux movie poster painting I did as a final project in one of my art classes. The assignment was a movie poster. I love the posters of the old science fiction movies. They are meticulously painted and composed. It’s so different then the the movie posters today, where the designer cuts and pastes some photos of the stars in Photoshop, adds a lame effect filter and calls it a day. I used my family and a 3d model of a woman for this painting. It took about 8 hours to complete. I notice my Metal Slug sketch I did last night has a similar set up (three heroes in the front, the villain super large in background) but a different composition.

Metal Slug 8 Comp Sketch (Daily Doodle 18)

metal slug 8 game news fan art

For the next 6 days I will be working on comps that I could make into illustrations. This is a comp study idea for a game that does not exist yet (and from the looks of it never will). You could technically call it ‘fan art’ but the game doesn’t exist so it makes it moot. I have enjoyed the Metal Slug games even though they still kick my posterior.

I tried a new method of blocking in shapes using the lasso tool and then filling it with the foreground color. Even with a action programmed it took me forever to get comfortable and it slowed me down. this sketch is very complex with people, martians, and robots everywhere. I took a hour and a half to get this far. To turn this into a painting I estimate it would take 10-15 hoursĀ  + 5hrs for the logo.

You opinion matters to me. On the final day I might setup a poll asking which illustration you like best. The best two wins… or something like that. Feedback and crits are always welcome.

Notes to ME:

Marko: research a action pose that Marko would be more dynamic. Research the Heavy Machine Gun and get the perspective accurately. Should I have ammo shooting out of it? Should I make Marko’s face filled with rage?

Evil General: fade him a bit so he is not so dominant.

Eri: Pose idea is fine, just research it to make it more accurate.
