Alex the Goat Concept Art

Here is some of the concept art I made for Alex the Goat character that was used in the dancing animated short I did a month ago. I’ve put at least 50 hours of work into this character and will use him in other animated shorts. While I did the animation to hopefully get an interview at CTN Expo (a big animation con) , I still would like to figure out how to share it with others.

Jungle Ruins (D40)

ruins painting in jungle digital

I felt better and wanted to work on a painting. I’ve been in an artistic knot for some time now and haven been happy with my work. One of the main reasons is because I stopped doing long periods of sketching and and not putting in the hours needed to improve on a regular basis.

Granted, I have been busy with a new job and working on commissions. Also trying to to learn Javascript and SEO/marking for my new job. Taking time to work on sketching and painting instead of playing games or wasting time on the net in my spare time.  But an artist must not just draw what they feel comfortable  with and must push further work further.

So here we are. I found a complex CC image of ruins on Flickr and did a painting based on it

I might finish it tomarrow.

For encouragement I’ve been watching tutorial videos on Pluralsight and returned to Oatley Academy’s Magic Box

I got some good advice from a couple youtube video interviews from artists and I would like to share them with you:

The 20/80 rule – doing 20 percent of the foundationial work correctly will effect 80 percent of the outcome. you could also see it as 20 refs, studies, and blocking in, 80 clean up and detail work.

Only be as fast as you can be accurate. Take your time, if you make mistake after mistake, it will start to build into a painting full of errors. Don’t fall into the trap of ‘speed painting’.

I you don enjoy a subject, why paint it, because if you don’t like what you’re drawing, people will get that when looking at the image.

‘Straits against curves’, it’s a cool line technique to avoid a sketch from having sameness

My goals as an artist is to slow down, take note of correct proportions, and search for the ‘character’ in everything I draw and to paint with a story in mind, even if is minuscule.

Deathwing (Daily Artwork 2)

See the 3d model in real-time: https://skfb.ly/JAVN

Today’s daily is sculpt of Deathwing from World of Warcraft. One of his unique features is his metal mandible.I decided to look up the official concept art for the dragon and try my hand at sculpting his head. Some adjustments had be made after an hour in I discovered that there where some alterations to the official model and made adjustments to match. Some versions show him with more rivets on the lower mandible, some don’t. After a hour and a half, my PC crash and I lost about 15 minutes of work and decided to just upload my last save.

I might polish the bust and texture it in the future.  Time spend 1h 30m

Impaler Monster (WIP) – (Mostly) Finished Texture and Started Rigg

3d monster game

The texture is basically finished. I made some stupid decisions when I was making the uv seems. I was unhappy with the seems I made so I just let the Paint wizard redo the seems automatically. BIG MISTAKE. However, I was able to hide my mistake with a little creative painting. Live and learn, I won’t make that mistake with the next model.

Also I started creating the character’s rig. C4D has a nice Character tool that makes the basic bones for you, and then you adjust them. The wight maps didn’t far too will, but I have bee doing a decent job at fixing them so far.

progress-4

I’m loosing sleep over this model. I been staying up to 3:00 in the morning for days. I haven’t even had time to draw. I wish I could of done this bloody thing in Maya and Mudbox. C4d is an awesome program but it doesn’t like my tablet and crashes if I attempt to use it. I have a different assignment due so I have to take a break from it.
