Daily Painting No.69 – Gryphon Drinking

gryphon drinking your troubles away

This poor gryphon has had a rough time. Dare you sit with him and hear his woes? I’ve have this fascination with giving the animals I paint human like feelings. The question is can I a make the viewer feel sorry for a monster? I painted this entirely out of my imagination, no references. I didn’t even do any thumbnail sketches. It is also one of my first back lighting comps.

I postponed my rock still life painting because I am taking a composition workshop at conceptart.org. My next three daily paintings will be my homework assignments. I’ve already seen improvements in my work taking this workshop. I’m now thinking of important design concepts while I’m painting and not leaving anything to ‘chance’. every stroke on my canvas means something. It’s also a relief to know I don’t have to paint every detail in a painting, and what I should focus my attention to. If I get my focal points set up correctly, I do not need to do much to the falloff, and my painting will still look finished.

1 hour; Painted from scratch in photoshop.

Alex and Cruz : Comic 01

anthro furry comic humor dragon cheetah vat of cheese

Finally . The first comic from a project I been working on and of six months on.  It is a 3d rendered comic /animation hybrid (the animation will be lacking for some time). The Cheetah is a little rough still. only the dragon is finished.  The dragon is not Alex though, the alligator is. The dragons name is Derrick. I’m actually am still working on the alligator but will start using him in test renderings as well. I brought back the unicorn from the dead, and was able turn the old dragon model into a lizard chick, so I have most of the cast ready. We need to start making sets for the characters to live in My friend is helping out on the project but so far I have done a majority of the work so far. I’m positive he will be very helpful and this will become a co-op project. But just in case he does bale out on me, I have a backup plan.. removing the cheetah character. The only elements he has helped out with so far is the design of the cheetah character and this test panel. But he sounds serious in helping me make the comics , joke ideas, the stage sets and promoting the thing so I don’t think I have anything to worry about.

Gator merchandiser sketch

More character ideas. I’ve been trying to give each character a little story so they are more interesting. This is a alligator merchandiser.

“There once was a gator merchandiser. He resets the shelves at local stores. He always got stuck with resetting the freezer sections of the store. One day he got stuck in a freezer and froze to death. The end”

Ok. So Maybe I exaggerated the freezing to death bit 🙂

Drawn on my iPad using rocreate.

Alex the Alligator Character Concept Art

anthro alligator cartoon friendly smile persona character fursona alter ego sillynes comic

Alex the alligator is a character I have designed for a comic /animation hybrid that I am working with a friend to produce. The character’s personality is based on my own. It was a interesting challenge to draw a friendly/geeky looking alligator. Funny animal alligators are usually portrayed as bullies. It’s going to be fun to bash stereotypes with this comic. Originally he was going to be a dragon but we decided for the projects to use only real animals. He has a dragon look in him still. My friend chose a cheetah for his character. A fat cheetah, that’s going to be interesting.

Update: I decided humans are better for this project at this time. He looks a lot like my dragon character Chris.

Chris the Dragon Character Sheet for Comics

anthro dragon orange male persona dean dragon humaniod figure fursona artwork figure thing wearing hoodin for comic cartoon

After attempting to use my 3d characters for a comic strip, I found the look to be disappointing. It just doesn’t look good to put 3d art in a 2d medium and I just couldn’t get satisfactory results from the toon shaders in Carrara. It’s almost as strange looking as 2d characters in front of photos. So I have decide to use 3d as a reference tool for things such as perspective, buildings and complicated poses.

As for the actual Character Sketch I wanted to keep Chris consistent to the 3d model in proportions and looks. However the fins didn’t look well in 2d so I changed the fins to hair which strangely enough made him look like a eastern dragon.  I then gave him those silly whiskers eastern dragons have just for silliness. The rest is about the same. Next is Jed the Unicorn.

I will still be using the 3d characters for the animations. I just need to give Chris hair and whiskers, which shouldn’t be too hard.

Jackal warrior with crossbow

anthro jackal furry warrior armed crossbow magic bolts aimin weapon looking at viewer

I’m trying to build up my portfolio and apply techniques I learned in the past 4-5 months into my newer paintings. This painting has a lot of firsts. It’s is the first attempt that I have made to take one of my black and white paintings and make it into a color painting using adjustment layers for segments and then painting over it. The first time I attempted to render fur without using a smudge tool, instead i drew every single hair. The first time I drew a person holding a firing weapon let alone a crossbow. I spend a lot of time researching the pose and the crossbow weapon. I was so ignorant about the crossbow that it didn’t realized it used bolts instead of arrows. I also wanted to attempt a secondary lighting source. which was the blue flame on the bolt. I spent about 11 hours total on the painting and 3 of that was sketching and researching how to make the jackal hold on to the crossbow. I am happy with it but something nags a me that there is something I could add to it to make it even better. Let me know what you think.
