Socially Awkward Dragon (D33)

dragoone

Not all dragons kidnap princesses and sleep on on a bed of gold. Some dragons are glued to their computers and sleep on a bed of comic books. I was going to post this yesterday but my internet was down last night (a event that is becoming more annoyingly common)

Trickster Coyote (Monster 17)

monster-trickster-4

The trickster coyote is a popular character in Native American lore. I was going to adorn him with a more traditional Native American outfit, but I didn’t have time to research it. I probably made the face a bit too cartoony. I still like how this study came out.

Painted in Artrage, time spent: 2 1/2 hours. Note: I know he’s technically not a ‘monster’ BUT is it a creature of myth so is kinda of counts 😀

Daily Paint 2- Edward Kenway (Assassin’s Creed IV)

edward kenway cartoon comic look assassian's creed 4 black flag

Today I did a cartoon version of Edward Kenway, main protagonist of the fourth game in the Assassin’s Creed series. I used official 3d art as a ref. The pose is simple. I’m still under the weather so I didn’t want to do anything elaborate like a crazy pose.

Toon-ifing something makes it easier to paint. Ran out of time, couldn’t paint the gun on his belt by his chest.

Ok, I have one rule when doing this daily paint thing: I cannot make an exact copy/study of anything and I must use refs as a guide.

This painting took 1 hour.

Meerkat Gossip (Daily Doodle 1)

mercat painting gossip chat standing NOT timone

I did this doodle of  two meercats in a zoo gossiping.  It’s not a dragon. what else is there to do in a zoo? who knew. the cat made pancakes that are blue. in the the zoo. Did I mention that it is not a dragon? I spent 2 hours on this non dragon painting.

I am returning to my daily art thing. For 45 days I will sketch, paint, and or draw something  unplanned every day for 45 days.

The wools:

0. It must be a creature or a animal (humans included). No dragons. I paint enough dragons already.

1. 10 thumbnail sketches before you even start the painting.

2. No less then 30 minutes, no more then 2 hours.

3.Black and white only (my brain will explode if I use color at this time)

4. The VALUE RANGE SHALL BE PUSHED TO IT”S LIMIT!

The goal (in King James speak): thou get thee ideas out of head, thou practiceif composition every day, thou coverith the full value range in thou picture.

Like the last daily project I will not paint on tuesdays due to having classes all day. sorry.

Did I mention that there is no dragon in this painting?

Daily Painting No.85 – Walking My Dog (WIP 3)

dragon anthro walking his awesome border collee

As I stated yesterday, I will be jumping around a half dozen unfinished paintings in a haphazard attempt to finish them. I am doing this for two reasons 1. For my portfolio. 2. To continue practicing refinement and details. I been on a dragon drawing/ painting binge for a few months. I’ve also have became a regular at the local zoo, sketching the animals there. If you want to get quick at drawing, regularly draw the animals at the zoo, they never stop moving. Half of my paintings feature dragons in them, I worry I might of overdone it.

I will continue to paint dragons in the future but I will be more balanced.  This daily painting project has successfully made me paint every day. However I need to make my daily paintings more academic, so after the 100th painting, I will focus on portraits (a few self portraits or ‘selfies’, saying the word selfies makes me feel stupid. ‘Portrait’ is not a difficult word to say), still life paintings (mostly toys of animals), and study/copies. I have been incorporating EVERY painting I’ve done into the daily painting project. almost like a quota. I should not do this. My daily painting project needs to be more academic and separate from my projects.

The most important thing about refining and adding details on a digital painting is this. 1. Keep your edges of your masses super clean. 2. Put most of the detail work in the focal point. 3the strokes with in a mass of a less important area of the painting can be much bigger then the focal point but make sure it isn’t ‘sloppy’, keep it clean. 4. put details only in bright highlighted areas, leave the dark areas to the viewer’s imagination.

Super Hexagon mini review

super hexagon is evil!

Update: I apologize if this post shows up in your reader more then once. Wordpres went crazy on me.

To make my little review a little less boring, I sketched this cartoon so you can see what happens to you 99% of the time in this game. You die.. A lot. Super Hexagon is a deceptively simple ‘tunnel’ game in which you guide a arrow circling around a giant hexagon. Walls are constantly coming toward you. If you hit a wall, its ‘game over’. There is six levels in this game. Your goal in each level is to survive the entourage of walls for 60 seconds. Sound simple, right? Ha! With the world constantly rotating, pulsating, and throwing out deviant patterns in your way. On your first try you will be fortunate if you survive for 5 seconds. It’s a hard game. But the more you play, the farther down the level you will get. Making it to the 60 second mark felt more rewarding to me then completing a 60 hour RPG. That says a lot. Right now (til January 2,2014)  it’s on sale at steam for a mere 59 cents. Since it takes a couple hours per level, it’s a great value. http://store.steampowered.com/app/221640/
