WIP 3D model for Cruz. The Cheetah version needs better textures as the ones being used are placeholders. Cruz is a cheetah due to my friend’s request. The human Cruz needs sandals instead of shoes. I should uv and texture the tail while I’m at it. I can see so many gags for a fat cheetah character. 😀
The third page in my comic short story. A little looser line then I usually draw. Just realized the the top three frames are not needed. It’s fun to figuring stuff out when approaching each frame. Repeated the same frame but put a different action in each frame. Gives it a movie like feel. Like my lame Onomatopoeia?
Second Page of Asgaut the Viking. Trying different camera angles and driving myself crazy drawing them. On the plus side I am sticking to 4-6 panels a page, which is admittedly small for a graphic novel comic book thingy.
Created in Photoshop. I used a soft round brush for inking. I find that even though I have a 8×6 drawing tablet, I cant get my lines crisp enough. I thought I would try using halftones for this page. It’s easy to create halftones in Photoshop. I had a blast shading it though. It’s funny, shading and shadows used to be what I hated to draw, but now it’s what I look forward to. Any feedback is welcome.
Next some concept designs and I am aiming for two pages next week.

Non art related. I’ve been digging though all the games I bought during a Steam sale. I have just played one of the strangest looking games ever. It’s caled Zeno Clash. The artwork and design of this game is so different compared to most fantasy games. It’s a interesting blend of Streets of Rage and Hexen and Pete knows what. The monster designs are so odd, you sometimes have to do a double take to make sure you saw what you thought you saw correctly. The acting is terrible to the point of irritation unfortunately. In fact I could barely understand the character giving the tutorial! And what do they have against chickens? Since a sequel is coming out soon, I wouldn’t be surprised if this game goes out on sale. Recommend if you want something strange and different.
Update: for some reason this never published for some reason, It remained in my drafts despite the fact that I clicked on publish. weird.
First page of my short comic story. Originally this was going to be the second page. I did a page that was detailed about the world, but it reviled too much too soon.
Created in Photoshop.
Time Spent 2 hours.
I also setup a blog for this comic project at “asgaut.wordpress.com“. I will be uploading the pages to both blogs. I was planing ahead a way for people that would like to read the comic beginning to end with ease.
Alex the alligator is a character I have designed for a comic /animation hybrid that I am working with a friend to produce. The character’s personality is based on my own. It was a interesting challenge to draw a friendly/geeky looking alligator. Funny animal alligators are usually portrayed as bullies. It’s going to be fun to bash stereotypes with this comic. Originally he was going to be a dragon but we decided for the projects to use only real animals. He has a dragon look in him still. My friend chose a cheetah for his character. A fat cheetah, that’s going to be interesting.
Update: I decided humans are better for this project at this time. He looks a lot like my dragon character Chris.
Introducing Asgaut the Viking. This is one of my experimental projects much like my daily head portraits. I want to do something that I haven’t done before, tell a short story in sequential art (comics). I’ve done comics in the past but they where either one panel gags or one page strips, but I would loose interest in them. I’ve been working for months on very epic story that would take pages and pages to tell in words let alone frames, but it is beyond me to create at this moment due to my lack experience in posing action shots. So I am putting that project on the backburner. I just wanted to actually MAKE a comic with a simple story that will take no more then a couple dozen pages. A comic that will start and end. It will be drawn in black and white, no color. I have written the script for each page already. Now all I need to do is draw the pages. I will start drawing them today. My goal is to get at least two pages done a week. If I can get 5-6 heads drawn a week, I should be able to get at least two pages done. Starting out small so I can actually finish something for a change :D. This painting is pretty boring but it is simply a ref for me to use when drawing the character. Later I will paint a more polished work of him doing something interesting. Added a Page

After attempting to use my 3d characters for a comic strip, I found the look to be disappointing. It just doesn’t look good to put 3d art in a 2d medium and I just couldn’t get satisfactory results from the toon shaders in Carrara. It’s almost as strange looking as 2d characters in front of photos. So I have decide to use 3d as a reference tool for things such as perspective, buildings and complicated poses.
As for the actual Character Sketch I wanted to keep Chris consistent to the 3d model in proportions and looks. However the fins didn’t look well in 2d so I changed the fins to hair which strangely enough made him look like a eastern dragon. I then gave him those silly whiskers eastern dragons have just for silliness. The rest is about the same. Next is Jed the Unicorn.
I will still be using the 3d characters for the animations. I just need to give Chris hair and whiskers, which shouldn’t be too hard.
Here’s a character that has been haunting my comics for years. Started out as a parody of Dr. Mario, but then evolved into something more sinister. Although having ‘Goode’ in his name he is a very lousy doctor, in fact his ineptness causes more harm then good. I enjoyed drawing his bizarre antics in the past but now he needed a update baddly. I wanted to see if I could improve the character after about 8 months of not drawing him to see if I could improve his design. Here is what Alex looked like 8 months ago: http://superdefective.wordpress.com/2012/06/25/iface/. Let me know what you think.
I obsessively continue to work on my models for my web comic / animation project ‘Jed and Dean’. I exaggerated the body forms to be more cartoon like. I wanted them to look more like funny animals and less like petting zoo people, so I removed the pants from the models and made the lower portion animal like (a common design for funny animals). Made custom clothes for both characters, there is still some errors in the clothes but I will tweak them out eventually. Dean’s legs and hip need some tweaking. Jed’s collar needs minor repairs. I’ve also started two extra characters. Meho the gryphon and Maggie the dragon, they also need some more tweaking. Since realism is not what I’m aiming at, the models will mostly remain gradient shaded with few textures. Dean and Jed are are at a state where I can start making comics but I haven’t decided if I would be toon shading them (only if I can find a good shader), drawing by hand and using them as reference models, or just using them as-is. I also will do some animation experiments before event attempting a short.
Created in Carrara (figures, and accessories) , Hexagon (figures and clothing) and Daz Studio (posing and attaching clothing to figures, taking figures and morphing it into the model)
Time spent so far: Around 30+ hours.
