Socially Awkward Dragon (D33)

dragoone

Not all dragons kidnap princesses and sleep on on a bed of gold. Some dragons are glued to their computers and sleep on a bed of comic books. I was going to post this yesterday but my internet was down last night (a event that is becoming more annoyingly common)

Hungry Dragon (D27)

dragon-hybrid-2test

This dragon looks hungry… Run Sir. Knight! Run!

I was only going to spend an hour painting today’s daily… I spent 3hours on it. I got stuck rendering the mouth (Mostly the top apparently), I have not rendered dragon’s mouth too much, it was a new challenge.  What do you think of this dragon? Does it look too generic or do you think it’s design is decent?

Shiloh (Commission)

painting6

A commission I worked on for Cuddlebug . The character’s name is Shiloh, cool furry dragon wizard. I am very pleased this painting, It feels like all my training and practice as an artist is coming together to a more refined level.

Dragon Doodle No.3 (LibreOffice Draw)

dragon-sketch-no-3

Today I drew in an app made for graphs and diagrams, not art; and it was a very annoying experience. Every time I would draw a curve it would make it a bounding box, if I tried to draw another curve too close to the bounding box, it would move the existing curve instead of making a new one. I cant deselect the curve because it has no deselect short cut. It’s quite a pain

If you have an app you enjoy drawing with, feel free to recommend it. So far the main apps I use are Manga Studio 5 and Photoshop.

Dragon Doodle in Blender 3d

Dragon-sketch-no1

Tonight I doodled this dragon out of my head in one of the most unlikely applications ever, Blender 3d; a program made for 3d modeling and animation, not 2d sketching.

Blender has this feature called ‘Grease Pencil’ that allows you to draw sketchy like ‘curves’ anywhere you like with your tablet, it will even stick to 3d objects. Note: This has nothing to do textures and UV (Although some use it for retopo)

To test the grease pencil,I set a block in front of the camera (set the camera to ‘ortho front’) and started drawing. This works way too good. I wouldn’t want to paint with this due to each color having to be on a separate layer but for sketching it is super.. er.. surprisingly effective.

Since grease pencil curves are in 3d, I could see many awesome uses for this tool, you can even ANIMATE with grease pencil curves and have at your disposal useful animation tools such as onion skinning.

For a free open source 3d app, blender continues to blow my mind.

I know I have 7 monsters remaining of my 30 monster project and its been a month since my last drawing. Homework and commissions take priority in my life. but after 30 monsters is finished, I will be doing a drawing project concerning dragons as I miss drawing them.

Also here is a screenshot of the sketch in blender:

Alex’s Mug

alex9

A experimental painting of my dragon Alex. I wanted to fuse more lizard like qualities into him. I might of added too much. I spent too much time revising this painting over and over.  I’m on the fence if I like the redesign or not. I started this with no prelim sketches. Bad move. This is my first painting using Manga Studio 5, so that is probably another reason I spent longer on it. I’ve used MS4 in the past  but MS5 is amazing and has the same photoshop tools I NEED to use and are important in my workflow like masking, selection tools, and transform tools. I hope that it will also let you save tool presets but I haven’t found it yet. I MIGHT just be able to leave Photoshop for good. CC you later Adobe 🙂

Wyvern (Dragon with wing arms) (Monster 15)

monster-15-dragon-2

I’ve returned to the monster painting project. I thought it would be best something furn. This was painted inArtrage. I found out how to turn the ‘3d’ effect off the paints. This helped me blend the color more like I would in Photoshop. Speaking of photoshop, Artrage’s solution to masks is ‘stencils’ and they are driving me crazy, I keep accidentally moving them and cant find a way to lock them. I am happy with this quick painting and am getting closer to thinking like a painter.

Alex the Dragon Sketch

alex-bordum-painting

A painting sketch of my dragon Alex (I haven’t drawn him in a long time) I spent more time on it then I was expecting. I did a decent job with the wings but got stuck for a while with painting the muscles attaching the wing to the shoulder and the neck area. I think it came out alright but it would have been better to have some reference on hand instead of drawing out of my imagination. I used Artrage to paint this.

Dragon/Dino walks and then trips

My first animation for the Advanced Animation class. The teacher allowed me to choose my own projects.

I picked character rigging by parenting and using the puppet wrap tool. The walk cycle is a little rough but I feel that the rig itself was successful.
