The final character drawing I did for the CTNX portfolio. It is of the Prince in my own style. I’m a big fan of the Katamari Damacy games.

Character 2.5 -Movember Barbarian (Wip 2)

Since I wont have access to my drawing tablet until tomorrow. I decided to refine the doodle I did yesterday. When it comes to drawing with lines, nothing beats a pen and paper. No tablet can get the definition a quality ballpoint pen or marker can get. The only downside is if you make a mistake, it is nearly impossible to conceal. For example, I messed up on the upper left strap, its was a little out of perspective, but I cant fix it. I attempted to ‘hide’ it by using the shadow created by the neck but It didn’t work in it’s entirety. that the only real advantage to drawing on the computer is the ease to correct mistakes. I might paint over this in Photoshop or I might move on to the next character. Haven’t decided yet.

Message to the Sea – Final Drawing for Draw II Class

Message-to-the-Steam---Ink-and-marker

I pulled all the stops for this drawing. After using graphite and charcoal for months, I returned to my old love : Ink. I went though 50 thumbnail sketches. I  made studies of eel anatomy, fish, boats, ocean waves, etc. I spent about 5 hours on the research side (thumbnails and studies) and about 10 hours rendering this with Micron Pens, Sharpies, and Copic markers. I avoided realism and aimed to make a narrative illustration you would see in a children’s book. It’s surprisingly difficult to render waves with ink. I used many visual tricks to force your eye to stare at the envelope (focal) in the middle. I feel my drawing and comp classes are starting to pay off.

Let me know what you think. I would to hear what you think is the narrative for this drawing.

Ink and marker on Bristol Board. 24×16. Time Spent :4-5 hours on research/studies, 8-10 hours on rendering the drawing.

Meerkat Gossip (Daily Doodle 1)

mercat painting gossip chat standing NOT timone

I did this doodle of  two meercats in a zoo gossiping.  It’s not a dragon. what else is there to do in a zoo? who knew. the cat made pancakes that are blue. in the the zoo. Did I mention that it is not a dragon? I spent 2 hours on this non dragon painting.

I am returning to my daily art thing. For 45 days I will sketch, paint, and or draw something  unplanned every day for 45 days.

The wools:

0. It must be a creature or a animal (humans included). No dragons. I paint enough dragons already.

1. 10 thumbnail sketches before you even start the painting.

2. No less then 30 minutes, no more then 2 hours.

3.Black and white only (my brain will explode if I use color at this time)

4. The VALUE RANGE SHALL BE PUSHED TO IT”S LIMIT!

The goal (in King James speak): thou get thee ideas out of head, thou practiceif composition every day, thou coverith the full value range in thou picture.

Like the last daily project I will not paint on tuesdays due to having classes all day. sorry.

Did I mention that there is no dragon in this painting?

Dragon Metamorphosis

dragon transformation dragon face man turning into a dragon sequence

This was a homework assignment for my Advanced Drawing class. The theme was metamorphosis. I have drawn many dragons but never a man turning into one, so I found it a fun challenge. I created the drawing in charcoal. Afterwards I scanned it in, fixed some minor issues in photos that came to my notice when it was critiqued, and added some color to the charcoal drawing. It took around 8 hours total just in the charcoal phase. Charcoal is a new medium for me and was struggling with it. A word of advice, never use vine charcoal to shade, use a compressed charcoal stick and a charcoal pencil instead.
