Daily Painting No.84 – Dragon Bust WIP

dragon badass portrait bust

I’ve been jumping around various unfinished paintings. I just can’t seem to focus all my energies on just one painting. I couldn’t seem to focus on anything today. It felt that I couldn’t get hardly anything done. I did get most of my assignments done, thankfully. Months ago, I painted a rough of this. I’ve been wanting to finish it for a while. I made a bunch of changes to the face and probably more to come. I will be alternating between this and three other unfinished paintings for this week. I am fast approaching my 100th day of painting daily. I am going to use those 15 days to finish my unfinished stuff. After the 100 day I will return to still life paintings and comp studies. I felt that the still life was the most useful too in learning how to paint.

Daily Painting No.46 – Study/Copy of Fierce Dragon Rider Dragon Eternity Concept art – the dragon’s head – Finale

fierce dragon rider art study copy dragon

My study of this dragon is done for now. I will be drawing some non dragon things this week, as I over did it with the dragons last week. I learned a ton doing this study/copy. I have a much better understanding on how to paint details, refine, and clean up. these are the observations I made painting this study.

1. the artist uses almost exclusively a round brush for his/her detail work. He’s favorite technique is to set the base mass color and crosshatch with a transparent brush of a similar hue.

2. the artist also blends with the smudge tool, but rarely, most of the smudging was on the neck of the dragon. His preferred method of mixing colors is crosshatching as mention earlier.

3. when adding details, it is best to work the painting as a whole and not get stuck in on area for too long.

4. It appears that the artist used defused lighting. It appears that it is coming a little behind the top right side of the painting, yet there is a sunset behind the dragon!?. there also some blue bounce light coming from below.

5. Working in a larger file size, will give you the ability to generate cleaner lines.

6. Always erase sloppy lines. Works best with a small eraser round brush.

I spend a little over three hours on this study. Painting from scratch in photoshop.

The left is the original artist painting, to the right is the study that I painted. Please feel free to critique and comment.

UPDATE: I FINALLY FOUND THE SOURCE of my study! The image i made a study from is concept art from a game called DRAGON ETERNITY! Thank god. It was driving be batty for months.

A different dragon – ipad drawing

20130616-232940.jpg

I been drawing quite a bit of dragons that are more like wild animals,I wanted to take a shot at drawing one that was mire of a ‘person’ and have a personality yet still resembled the fire breathing monster we all know and love. Maybe this dragon was once a man and is now struggling with is new body, or perhaps is a domestic dragon that is kind to humans and is like a loyal pet to them. I wanted to try this with out resorting to anthropomorphism. Here is the fished drawing. I struggled with this one, changing various features, over and over. Im not quite sure if i like this drawing or not. Painted in Procreate

Dragon Face Value Painting WIP 2

dragon painting bust head portrait concept art

Finally got back to working on this painting. Put more details into the scales, and rendered the mouth more.  I just need to do some more scale rendering and finish lighting it. Then I can start coloring. Painted in Photoshop. Time spent so far: About 3 hours. Let me know what you think so far.

Was watching Captain America: The first Avenger while painting this. The movie was pretty well made and had great production values. Chris Evans did a good job at portraying Steve Roger. The story was predicable but enjoyable nether the less. I was impressed however with the ending credit sequence, It was very interesting how they took the images from old U.S WW2 propaganda posters and animated them.

Crocodile Portrait

I will be doing portraits of animals for the rest of the week.  Today I painted one of my favorite reptiles, the crocodile. I ignored the smudge tool and solely used the flat round brush. I had so much fun painting this that I lost track of time and have no clue how long I spent on it. Painting from scratch in Photoshop using a wacom tablet.

I remembered Wikimedia commons is a great place for public domain and CC photos. Here is the link to the ref photo I used if your interested.

In other news I found 6 of the 7 ‘Nausicaa of the valley of the Wind’ manga graphic novels at a thrift store for the price of one. Hayao Miyazaki’s films had a major impact on me when I was younger and have watched most of his films. But I never seen his comic work before he became a director. I’m not the biggest manga fan but this is wonderful artwork. It’s all black and white with with a spot of halftone but it looks very complex even though it is simple. Wikipedia article here.

I’ve also have a urge to play ‘Shadow of the Colossus’ for some reason after looking at the comics. I have no clue why.

I’m please with the face. She’s almost in profile. The hair and neck could use some more work.

My daily head painting practice. This one I struggled a bit with.  Because the the perspective was above the viewer’s eye and I not used to drawing a head at such a angle.  But I made it though. I went a half hour over and still didn’t have time for the hair or blending the face so this picture is still quite raw.  I thought the teeth and open mouth would be difficult but it was actually much easier then I anticipated.
