Daily Paint 14 – Samus Aran

Samus Aran

Tonight was a test in controlling my dragon like anger (painting is usually a relaxing thing for me).. First I attempted to use the PC version of Autodesk Sketchbook Pro (I love the Android version with a unhealthy passion). I purchased a year subscription to the program for around $10 or so during Christmas. I been sketching with it and it’s been great for that.. But I attempted to paint with it tonight. It was a pure nightmare. First I could find a brush that had low occupancy that I could use to ‘blend’ colors by using the eyedrop tool (ALT). I use blending brushes sparingly as I like the control of using the eyedropper. There is no shortcut buttons to change the occupancy, Just this stupid circle thing. Even with the lowest setting, I still couldn’t get smooth transitions between colors. After a half hour, I said ‘screw it’ and imported the painting into Photoshop (It has awesome painting tools, it’s not just for photos) and desperately tried to get stuff done with the remaining half hour I had before I had to go to bed. My computer also crashed once due to my stupid driver. This is as far as I got. In the future I will paint Samus again and make a painting that does her justice. There are good art days and bad ones. 1 hour.

Daily Painting No.17 – Portrait

11-17-2013

I wanted to try a new technique of digital painting. A method of cleaner brush strokes. It took me a while to get used to it, that’s why I didn’t get as much done. The last thirty minutes I was starting to get the hang of it.. The teeth and the hair are unfinished as well as the wrinkles around his eye. It’s very unfinished. The reference I used was some random person on Wikimedia commons. He was apparently once the prime minister of Norway, a person I am ignorant of knowing anything about him.  only the soft round, eyedropper and eraser where used.

I painted this in Photoshop with a wacom tablet. Time Spent 1 hr

Speed Painting of actress Bhavana Menon

I forgot to upload this. Speed painting of actress Bhavana Menon. I am unfamiliar with her work. I just liked her face and decided to paint it. Time limit was 15 minutes. I’m going to stop time limits.

here is the video of me painting her.

Alec 3D model WIP (Both Human and Dragon)

alec human 3d model anthropomorphic dragon version

It’s been a while since I have worked on this project. Changed Alex’s name to Alec so it doesn’t get confused with another character I have made (Dean,Chris,Alex, and Alec.. Oh what will I name him next :D) . Did some tweaks on the 3d human model. The human model is most important as it will be used most of the time. Gave Alec more weight. Finished the dragon model of Alec. I switched it from a dragon to a alligator ( I gave up on the alligator model) and back again. There is no direct  connection in the storyline between the human and dragon versions of Alec. It’s more of a alternate dimension type thing that just gives me more opportunities for gags. The face of dragon Alec is much thicker and stubby then earlier versions and body is now more anthro then funny animal. I still need to model new pants and add shoe strings to the shoes. Ditched the hair on the dragon model and made him white for better readability. the dragon’s feet need some modifications to look more dragon like.

BLU Medic Portrait

blu medic tf 2 evil smile

The Medic is one of my favorite TF2 characters. I did a quick sketch of him last week. I felt that I needed to finish this portrait. I use it as my avatar in Deviant Art.

I also add a hot bounce light for fun. It’s amazing how adding another light source brings paintings to life.  Next portrait is that of Becky Wisdom, a kind lady who follows my blog and is brave enough to allow me to paint a portrait of her face.Photoshop

Self Portrait 4-14

To be honest. after the last couple blunders, I was getting burned out and discouraged with my portraits. After seeing some of Mary-Q’s self portraits, It encouraged me to continue doing daily portraits. I think the secret to keep being motivated is to experiment with different techniques. I just used a solid round brush. that’s it. No smudging, no custom brushes, no preliminary drawing. It’s almost like less was more and I was able to focus better on the values. I spent about 45 minutes painting this.

Cruze 3d Model WIP

3d chubby character

3d model WIP model for Cruze that ‘other’ protagonist. Cruz is the more spontaneous, easy going type compared to Alex who is all ‘Serious Business'(I can’t believe I quoted a meme, no wonder I am forever alone 🙂 ). In the design process I decided shorts would be the best choice for Cruze to wear, because my friend, rain, snow, or shine will be wearing shorts!  His ancestry must have polar bear genes. The shoes are place holders and will be changed.

Time spent 2 hours.Created in Hexagon, Daz Studio and Photoshop

Alex 3d Model WIP 4-13-2013

Alex human too 3d model character alter ego character gator 3d character

First rough of the character Alex. The character that represents myself for web comic / animation thingy that I keep restarting. It is a project with my friend. I be doing the art and character design, he will be coloring the comics and promotion, we will both be scripting, animation, and voice acting. This time due to Carrara’s buggyness, I used just Hexagon to create the model and then imported them into DAZ Studio Pro as morphs that where applied directly to the base mesh. I created clothing and hair in Hexagon as well. The hoodie was on my dragon and I just reused it. The pants and shoes are sliced and diced from clothing that came with DAZ. They are simply placeholders until I can make my own shoes and pants or mod them into something decent.  You might be wondering, ‘wasn’t he a gator/dragon in the concept art?’ Yes there was but it doesn’t fit with what we want to do.  I feel human characters are a better fit for this project for now. I still have a dragon model I spent forever on, I will be using it for SOMETHING. I still think gators are awesome.

Update: Updated some text text that didn’t make since. I called him my alter-ego, I think that was incorrect terminology.

Time Spent: 3 hours on this model, so far.

Tools used:
Hexagon for modeling morphs(face and body) and clothing
DAZ studio for applying morphs, and posing
Photoshop painting textures for assembly of renders
