I participated in http://www.lynda.com/Design-Illustration-tutorials/21-Day-Drawing-Challenge/164144-2.html?utm_medium=ldc-partner&utm_source=SSPRC&utm_content=524&utm_campaign=CD14621&bid=524&aid=CD14621). Truthfully I was hoping to upload the new challenge drawing every day, but I have been swamped with homework this month. Being the genus that I am, I took 15 credit hours at 3 different colleges. I am almost done with a 8 week psychology course, and I spend around 6-9 hours a week on the darn thing. It’s driving me crazy. So I haven’t post in a month. But I did successfully finish the challenge. I have a friend join me on the challenge and it helped a lot. I enjoyed the challenge, my only gripe is that it was supposed to be for all skill levels but my non-artist friend struggled with it, I had to help him along and teach him techniques that the videos did not mention. I actually enjoyed teaching him. However, the course made him discover that he loves drawing and had decided to continue with it, which I am excited about. I definitely will do another monthly challenge after I finish dreaded Psychology get caught up on other things. (It will be a while).

My Offical Mascott/Logo thingy
Because I will be uploading speed painting videos and tutorials in the future (and perhaps a indie game if I can get off my scaly butt to finish it) that it might be wise to have some sort of logo to display before each video. Remember my ‘dragon self portrait’ I made a while back for laughs and giggles that I been using it as a avatar for a while. I decided to revise it for the logo and make him a bit more toony. Also added a indention onto the nose. because I have that on my face and I dislike it. I named him Dean.
Dragon Self Portrait 2 (sketch to digital painting experiment 2)
My second experiment to make a pencil sketch a digital painting. I was reading one of Bod Eggleton’s books and he suggested trying to draw yourself as one as exercise. Since I’m not a dragon, I cannot attest to how accurate this self portrait is 😀 I’ve tried this once before (https://maugryph.com/2012/10/24/dragon-self-portrait/). I was very happy to give the painting a more watercolor like aesthetic. The sketch took me twenty minutes and painting took about a hour and fifteen minutes. Painted in photoshop.
Sketches: Sheep, a Rock, Dragon from a excerise, Self Portrait Excerise
The best sketches from the last couple days. Someday I will upload my sketches to dragonsketches.wordpress.com.
First was a suggested exercise in a Bob Eggleton to draw yourself as a dragon. So here it is. It’s not the first time I attempted it, it’s the second time. here is the first https://maugryph.com/2012/10/24/dragon-self-portrait/
First was a study of two dragons from a Bob Eggleton book.
Then a light study of a sheep and a rock. exciting.
Self Portrait 4-14
To be honest. after the last couple blunders, I was getting burned out and discouraged with my portraits. After seeing some of Mary-Q’s self portraits, It encouraged me to continue doing daily portraits. I think the secret to keep being motivated is to experiment with different techniques. I just used a solid round brush. that’s it. No smudging, no custom brushes, no preliminary drawing. It’s almost like less was more and I was able to focus better on the values. I spent about 45 minutes painting this.

Alex 3d Model WIP 4-13-2013
First rough of the character Alex. The character that represents myself for web comic / animation thingy that I keep restarting. It is a project with my friend. I be doing the art and character design, he will be coloring the comics and promotion, we will both be scripting, animation, and voice acting. This time due to Carrara’s buggyness, I used just Hexagon to create the model and then imported them into DAZ Studio Pro as morphs that where applied directly to the base mesh. I created clothing and hair in Hexagon as well. The hoodie was on my dragon and I just reused it. The pants and shoes are sliced and diced from clothing that came with DAZ. They are simply placeholders until I can make my own shoes and pants or mod them into something decent. You might be wondering, ‘wasn’t he a gator/dragon in the concept art?’ Yes there was but it doesn’t fit with what we want to do. I feel human characters are a better fit for this project for now. I still have a dragon model I spent forever on, I will be using it for SOMETHING. I still think gators are awesome.
Update: Updated some text text that didn’t make since. I called him my alter-ego, I think that was incorrect terminology.
Time Spent: 3 hours on this model, so far.
Tools used:
Hexagon for modeling morphs(face and body) and clothing
DAZ studio for applying morphs, and posing
Photoshop painting textures for assembly of renders
Self Portrait, Wearing Fedora, Behind Bright Light
I painted my my own face today (on computer :D). It’s amazing but I never attempted to paint a person wearing a hat. I attempted to draw a dragon wearing a hat (and yes it looked weird) but not a person. I rarely wear hats despite having three fedoras (gifts). This time I painted over a paper texture in my attempts to make it look like a traditional pencil and watercolor sketch and then added a brown monotone. For fun I colored the eyes blue, which is my eye color.
Portrait, Male, Dynamic Lighting
To keep things fresh, this painting I tried a more dynamic lighting. I took a picture of myself in a dark room with my webcam with the lighting source my computer monitor on the side. I used that as the reference for this painting. I found this painting to be frustrating. First I painted it on a black canvas. I’m used to painting on a grey canvas. Second, since most of the face was in darkness, I had trouble figuring out shape placement and in my shame had to repaint or move parts around. In the photo I look calm and mysterious. In my finished painting I feel I look menacing. I’m not happy with it. Spent around 45 minutes on it before retiring the painting.

Dragon Self Portrait
I was painting a self portrait of my self when i got irritated with it. So after hours and of work I have painted myself as a dragon. I haven’t even colored it yet. It has a resemblance of my comic character Chip. when I showed this to my friends, they joked around and said they couldn’t see a difference (at least I hope they where joking) I am curious to try this dragon metamorphism on one of my friends as well. I could start my own army of dragon humanoid freaks. Its one of the best digital paintings I have done so far. I created it from scratch in Adobe Photoshop.
