Hobbit: You have nice manners for a thief and a liar (WIP)

smaug and hobbit cumberbach nice manners for a liar and thief

It is always important to mind your manners, even when your trying to steal a golden cup Arkenstone from a giant fire breathing dragon Cumberbatch . I don’t know why this image popped in my head, but it did. It probably has something to do with the stereotype of the british loving their tea . Although I spent a couple of hours on this already, it is still pretty rough. I need to get it done by tomorrow so it is adjacent with the release of Peter Jackson’s money printing machine the second Hobbit film. I did enjoy the second film so I look forward to seeing it again.

Note to self: it occurred to me that I have either made smaug too small or the dwarves and hobbitze too big. It throughs a ratchet in my comp so I will try to figure it out.

Still Life 10 – Glue Bottle in MS Paint

still life in ms paint

Trying to get out of my comfort zone. I had this glue bottle on my desk and decided to paint a still life of it. I asked myself “What is the most uncomfortable way to paint this thing? I know! MS Paint with only the pencil tool and the default pallet!” MS paint has no wacom sensitivity or transparency and a stupid loading circle would show up every time I pressed down onto the tablet. There are some new brushes available but they are a joke and have no control options. when I was a kid i used to make pixel art with it because it has decent zooming tools. you can still make some great work with it if you are patient (I’m not). What is disappointing about ver 6.1 is that the halftone patterns are gone. it would of helped allot with this painting to able to use halftone gradients. It’s amazing how MS Paint is still the dinosaur of paint apps after all this time. 25 minutes.

Still Life 9 – The Monster In My Glass

monster dino in glass or pure doom and hate and lust for doom

As strange as it looks. It IS a still life painting. For a school art project I was taking apart cheap $1 toys and then putting them back to together as a mash-up. Dr. Frankenstein would have been proud. One of my creations was a stegosaurus centaur. Unfortunately I messed up when gluing it and the poor thing fell apart. the only parts that stayed together (barley) was the neck/head and the torso. I thought it would be cool to use my florescent light as the only main lighting source. Well.. it over-saturated all the colors. This was extremely hard for me to paint because every color was at both a high saturation and value. I finally gave up and added a lower value blue.  I will only use the florescent light for fill lighting from now on.

Dragon Guy (in 3DDDDDDD!) (WIP)

dragon wearing a hoody

I know its a bit ad hoc to start another dragon model when I’m unfinished with the previous one but I  got a little overwhelmed with it. I though I would get more comfortable with 3d sculpting by just doing a bust (a sculpture of the head) instead of the whole body. In contrast to the previous dragon model who I envision as a savage warrior, this dragon is a friendly chap. His name is Dean. He is a human-dragon hybrid. Since he is a ‘civilized’ dragon, his horns have been sanded down to avoid.. um.. accidental impalement. In a fantasy world he would be the type of dragon you would chat with at the water cooler at work, not the type you would fight to rescue the princess.. Stereotypes are boring. Why cant we have fantasy worlds where dragons are firefighters, trolls can be English gentlemen, and mermaids own pet stores?  This model still need a ton of work. Three hours so far.

Trust me! I’m a dragon (T shirt design)

trust me i'm a dragon, smirk, sinister dragon, toon dragon, happy dragon, dragon dragon

My second T-Shirt design featuring a dragon. I drew the dragon on my iPad and the wacky font I drew in Photoshop.  T Shirts are a fascinating form of graphic design (to me) that I wish I would of considered earlier. While I doubt I will make a living making these. It helps me think outside the box and incorporate both graphics and text into a piece.

Later Gator

Another T-shirt design. It was originally a quick sketch but I liked it so much, that I colored the gator in Photoshop. It’s a bit more raw then my previous design as my sketch marks show though, but I like how it came out.

If you actually like the design enough to wear it, you can purchase it here: http://www.redbubble.com/people/maugryph/works/10754317-later-gator

Wuw mee, imma DWAGON T-Shirt and Sticker Design

Dragon otherkin pardoy tshirt design

My first finished illustration in months.

I had decided to start doing T-shirts and Sticker designs for two reasons: 1. to have some new content in my design portfolio and 2. to try not to starve. Here is my first design. It has a dragon.. I’m mean a dwagon on it.  I wanted to do something rather quick and catoony but yet still use all the lighting practice I’ve been doing lately. I would like to attempt 3 designs a week if I can but that will probably be too much for me to do. Feedback is always welcome.

If your interested in buying a sticker or shirt, I am currently using RedBubble. Depending on item: Prices vary from $2 to $30. Here is the Link : http://www.redbubble.com/people/maugryph/works/10728477-wuv-mee-imma-dwagon?

Knights do WHAT to Dragons?

knights-do-WHAT-to-dragons

A dragon discovering that the Knight visiting the town next to his cave is not here for a picnic (maybe a bar brawl but not a picnic). It would have to be a very cold hearted knight to slay a dragon with a face like that 😀

This was rendering practice. I tried my utmost to make the surface be as smooth and three dimensional as possible.  I achieved the effect by alternating between brush strokes and smudging. I want my paintings to be professional. My past art has relayed heavily on line too much, and when I did render the painting, I felt that I was too sloppy.  Blending as I go seems to be the best solution at this time.

I know i have been painting dragons regularly for a month now. Before that I feel that I have been jumping around so much before hand that I never got practically good at any subject. Dragons are great for experimentation. So I will be  focusing on three subjects for the next 6 months. The three subjects I will be focusing on are:

Characters doing things. (Characters doing of all types doing stuff, not just standing there like zombies)

Story Illustration (I write a short story about a paragraph long and then make a painting of that scene) Bonus points if it is a epic landscape. double bonus if is a giant monster.

And I would like to continue to improve my dragons.

Looks like Cruz and Alec are in a pickle now 😀 . Despite my models not being finished. I couldn’t wait to try them out to make sure they ‘work’ well. I had way too much fun making this 🙂  I used some old rejected models below Alec, you might recognize some of them. I thought since I put so much time in them I might as use them at least once so they don’t go to waste 🙂

Alex the Alligator Character Concept Art

anthro alligator cartoon friendly smile persona character fursona alter ego sillynes comic

Alex the alligator is a character I have designed for a comic /animation hybrid that I am working with a friend to produce. The character’s personality is based on my own. It was a interesting challenge to draw a friendly/geeky looking alligator. Funny animal alligators are usually portrayed as bullies. It’s going to be fun to bash stereotypes with this comic. Originally he was going to be a dragon but we decided for the projects to use only real animals. He has a dragon look in him still. My friend chose a cheetah for his character. A fat cheetah, that’s going to be interesting.

Update: I decided humans are better for this project at this time. He looks a lot like my dragon character Chris.
