Socially Awkward Dragon (D33)

dragoone

Not all dragons kidnap princesses and sleep on on a bed of gold. Some dragons are glued to their computers and sleep on a bed of comic books. I was going to post this yesterday but my internet was down last night (a event that is becoming more annoyingly common)

Daily Paint 2- Edward Kenway (Assassin’s Creed IV)

edward kenway cartoon comic look assassian's creed 4 black flag

Today I did a cartoon version of Edward Kenway, main protagonist of the fourth game in the Assassin’s Creed series. I used official 3d art as a ref. The pose is simple. I’m still under the weather so I didn’t want to do anything elaborate like a crazy pose.

Toon-ifing something makes it easier to paint. Ran out of time, couldn’t paint the gun on his belt by his chest.

Ok, I have one rule when doing this daily paint thing: I cannot make an exact copy/study of anything and I must use refs as a guide.

This painting took 1 hour.

Daily Painting No.16 – Iguana Sketch

iguana dark art

I did a painting of this iguana out of my mind, while watching the Lotr with my dad ( To my surprise he had never seen it) I started painting the little critter on my iPad but then gott irritated so after the movie was over I finished the shadows in Photoshop. I have no clue how long I spent on him, since I was watching the movie on and off. Self Critique: need to fix the bounce light in the shadows and lighten some areas of the cast shadows since they darker then the core shadow. the area around his eye got mess up somehow. Any feedback is appreciated.

Chris the Dragon Character Sheet for Comics

anthro dragon orange male persona dean dragon humaniod figure fursona artwork figure thing wearing hoodin for comic cartoon

After attempting to use my 3d characters for a comic strip, I found the look to be disappointing. It just doesn’t look good to put 3d art in a 2d medium and I just couldn’t get satisfactory results from the toon shaders in Carrara. It’s almost as strange looking as 2d characters in front of photos. So I have decide to use 3d as a reference tool for things such as perspective, buildings and complicated poses.

As for the actual Character Sketch I wanted to keep Chris consistent to the 3d model in proportions and looks. However the fins didn’t look well in 2d so I changed the fins to hair which strangely enough made him look like a eastern dragon.  I then gave him those silly whiskers eastern dragons have just for silliness. The rest is about the same. Next is Jed the Unicorn.

I will still be using the 3d characters for the animations. I just need to give Chris hair and whiskers, which shouldn’t be too hard.

Vector Character in a 3D world test

vector character and 3d model combonation test with illustrator and sketchup

Just making make sure this would actually work. I created my first set for my comic in 3d, the dragon’s work area. After I created the set, I experimented with rendering to see what way would be best and tried various toon shaders , flat shading, among other things. I found the best result and it matched with the vector character, as I want it to look as seamless as possible. I’m using techniques used more by animators then cartoonist for this project. I want the comic to look very clean and professional.

Anthro Gryphon

anthro gryphon furry gryphon oc fursona just joking

Another experiment sketch of a gryphon character I’ve been working on. This time i tried anthropomorphic animal style . the biggest issue was the wings, the wings themselves are not difficult to draw but more what size in relationship to the body should I make them. too big and they look dorky, too small and he can’t fly with them which defeats having wings on him in the first place. I think i will keep Maugryph more of a realistic gryphon and and avoid the anthro route.
