I’m please with the face. She’s almost in profile. The hair and neck could use some more work.

Portrait of a Girl, Irritated, Black Eyes (Value Sketch / Painting)

girl head portrait female irritated annoyed black and white picture

Today’s portrait sketch is that of a young girl. I haven’t attempted painting a child’s head before. Since I currently have no good reference pictures of children, I went to morguefile.com and found this photo http://www.morguefile.com/archive/display/140295. There is a couple issues with my painting, but I am somewhat happy with it. I went over my time by 10 minutes. This time I painted over a quick line sketch I made first. I allowed me to paint much quicker this time. I even got some of the ears and hair started 🙂

Head Portrait, Woman, Surprised (Value Painting / Sketch)

woman female surprised head up mouth open

My daily head painting practice. This one I struggled a bit with.  Because the the perspective was above the viewer’s eye and I not used to drawing a head at such a angle.  But I made it though. I went a half hour over and still didn’t have time for the hair or blending the face so this picture is still quite raw.  I thought the teeth and open mouth would be difficult but it was actually much easier then I anticipated.

The Promise

concept ocean landscape dynamic sunset black and white photo painting 3d shadow chiaroscuro landscape landscape painting fantasy tower in water girl man patting on her back

For this painting I wanted to tell  some story between the two characters in the foreground and paint a ocean\sunset scene with some sort of stone structures protruding out of the water. I was surprised how quickly I was able to paint this. It took me about three hours to complete. I didn’t smudge this time to blend. Instead I used as soft round brush like a airbrush.  I enjoy value painting so much.  Let me know what you think 🙂

Update: Shrunk down the birds on the tower as they where too big. Lighted up the sides, made it too dark. Cleaned up the tower farthest in the distance

Head 3, Woman, High Angle

female head drawing woman looking up extreme angle looking up black and white digital artwork

Head 3 of 20. I finished my third head value sketch!  I wanted to challenge myself and try a different perspective at a high angle. It quite a bit of fun to draw heads when you get comfortable with it. I took some extra time and smoothed out my brushmarks and added pores to the skin. I still just focusing on the main facial area at the moment. I worry about the ears and hair at a different stage

Heroic Head

head portrait heroic head macho portrait digital artwork painting

More head practice. This time a value sketch of man’s head. I wanted him to look more heroic so I exaggerated some features like the cheekbones and the cleft chin yet I still wanted to look grounded in real life. I spent about 30 minutes on him more or less. I really enjoy painting in Photoshop since I have learned that you can change the opacity of the brush by pressing the numbers key a few months ago. I do my best to imitate gouache when painting and constantly change the opacity of the paint. Gouache (solid watercolors out of a tube with gum added) is what I used to paint in before I went digital. I tried acrylics in the past and disliked it and oils bothered my skin .  It kinda feels like gouache minus the mess and you get layers (unlike real gouache the will actually flakes off if you apply too much on top) 😀

This painting has been driving me crazy. this is my second revision of the Humanoid Dragon.

Update: fojap gave me some useful suggestions on some goof ups i did with the lighting, uploaded new version with fixes applied.

Update 2: right hand was completing for focal point,  I put arm down to restore to focal point towards the head.
