Daily Painting No.80 – Velociraptor attacking Soldiers (WIP 1)

velocirapter attacking solders painting still life

I miss painting still life. With this still life, I plan on combining what I see with my imagination. I dub this a ‘Fanstasy Still Life Painting’ TM (lol) The best of both worlds. For the next couple days I will be working on this painting. My focus for my paintings are refinement and details. Something I can’t do too much with a 1 hour speed painting. I hope to invest 6+ hours on this. Feedback is very much appreciated. I wont be able to upload stuff on Tuesdays for a couple months. I have classes all day making it impossible for me to do so. Wednesdays though Mondays will be business as usual.

…and yes I intentionally did not put feathers on the raptor. Another paleontologist is dieing somewhere inside. How can I take paleontology seriously when they named the Dracorex after the Hogwarts school in Harry Potter? (yes I am joking about the paleontology thing, but not the Dracorex’s name)

Daily Painting No.69 – Gryphon Drinking

gryphon drinking your troubles away

This poor gryphon has had a rough time. Dare you sit with him and hear his woes? I’ve have this fascination with giving the animals I paint human like feelings. The question is can I a make the viewer feel sorry for a monster? I painted this entirely out of my imagination, no references. I didn’t even do any thumbnail sketches. It is also one of my first back lighting comps.

I postponed my rock still life painting because I am taking a composition workshop at conceptart.org. My next three daily paintings will be my homework assignments. I’ve already seen improvements in my work taking this workshop. I’m now thinking of important design concepts while I’m painting and not leaving anything to ‘chance’. every stroke on my canvas means something. It’s also a relief to know I don’t have to paint every detail in a painting, and what I should focus my attention to. If I get my focal points set up correctly, I do not need to do much to the falloff, and my painting will still look finished.

1 hour; Painted from scratch in photoshop.

Daily Painting No.39 (Maugryph’s Gryphon)

anthro gryphon mascot hero author artist alter ego fursona gryphon grffin roger roger

A gryphon with a scarf. Character design WIP, first pass. I had this character on the back burner for over a year. A more cartoon/anthro/funny animal like design then I have been drawing recently . I like scarfs. I also like gryphons (I don’t have ‘Gryph’ in my avatar name just randomly :D). I used to draw them often. This guy started out as my blog’s mascot. I still prefer a dragon for my icon. If you would like to see the design from a year ago, here it is: https://maugryph.com/?attachment_id=35

Critique: left foot is a little off, arms need refinement. the wings need feathers. the gryphon’s face looks too much like mine (minus the beak of course). refine refine refine.

back to still life painting and studies tomorrow.

Anthro Gryphon

anthro gryphon furry gryphon oc fursona just joking

Another experiment sketch of a gryphon character I’ve been working on. This time i tried anthropomorphic animal style . the biggest issue was the wings, the wings themselves are not difficult to draw but more what size in relationship to the body should I make them. too big and they look dorky, too small and he can’t fly with them which defeats having wings on him in the first place. I think i will keep Maugryph more of a realistic gryphon and and avoid the anthro route.
