Wyvern Hero Concept Art (Monster 22) (Project Phoenix)

wyvern-concept-mid-painting-attempt2-pose-altered

This Wyvern will be the ‘character player’ of my future game: Code named “Project Phoenix”

I’ve come to the conclusion that I do my best work when a project is in mind. I will be making a very short 3d shooter similar to games like Gradius and Salamander. I’m literally ‘killing three birds with one stone’ by incorporating models I will be making as homework for my 3d classes into the models and props for the game. And since the baddies will also be monsters, I can finish my monster project with my concept art!

After the game is finished, I will make a demo reel showcasing the gameplay, models, and concept art of my last two games.

Anyways I’ve been busy with art commissions as of late, so I haven’t been able to update my blog as much as I liked. I should be able to upload them shortly.

Wendigo (Monster 18)

monster-wendigo2

The monster I painted today is called a wendigo. It is in the myths of the Algonquian people. One version of the myth states this scary monstrosity was once a human but because he tasted the flesh of another man, he was warped and twisted into this creature and now hunts and eats the living. It has described with ‘desiccated skin’ and ‘bones popping out of the flesh’.  A terrifying creature for sure. I want to give it a ‘undead’ look but not be gory.

Trickster Coyote (Monster 17)

monster-trickster-4

The trickster coyote is a popular character in Native American lore. I was going to adorn him with a more traditional Native American outfit, but I didn’t have time to research it. I probably made the face a bit too cartoony. I still like how this study came out.

Painted in Artrage, time spent: 2 1/2 hours. Note: I know he’s technically not a ‘monster’ BUT is it a creature of myth so is kinda of counts 😀

Dragon Astronaut (Space Dragon)

space-dragon-cover5

Artwork I did for my upcoming album ‘Space Dragon’. This will be the cover art. I might keep it painterly or refine it some more, haven’t decided. I was making a ‘space RPG’ but decided to cancel the project, however, 7 decent songs had already written. I was brainstorming what illustration to make for the album cover. An astronaut being attacked by a dragon t would of been interesting but then I thought ‘why not make a dragon astronaut?’  Artwork was painted in Artrage. What do you think of it?

Wyvern (Dragon with wing arms) (Monster 15)

monster-15-dragon-2

I’ve returned to the monster painting project. I thought it would be best something furn. This was painted inArtrage. I found out how to turn the ‘3d’ effect off the paints. This helped me blend the color more like I would in Photoshop. Speaking of photoshop, Artrage’s solution to masks is ‘stencils’ and they are driving me crazy, I keep accidentally moving them and cant find a way to lock them. I am happy with this quick painting and am getting closer to thinking like a painter.

Alex the Dragon Sketch

alex-bordum-painting

A painting sketch of my dragon Alex (I haven’t drawn him in a long time) I spent more time on it then I was expecting. I did a decent job with the wings but got stuck for a while with painting the muscles attaching the wing to the shoulder and the neck area. I think it came out alright but it would have been better to have some reference on hand instead of drawing out of my imagination. I used Artrage to paint this.

Random Dragon Sketch

random-dragon-is-random

Hello everyone.  Here is a little sketch of a dragon I did in Artrage. I’m pretty surprised the makers of Artrage gave the 4.5 version as a free upgrade to all 4.0 users. It has better line smoothing then Photoshop. I’m considering sketching in Artrage and then porting the drawing over to Photoshop for painting, that is unless I want to use the natural painting tools.

Fortunately I have not been able to work on the game for the last two days because, I’ve school finals,  and was called in for potential jury duty (thankfully wasn’t chosen), an working on a test for a potential job. I’ve been busy. The final assignment for my composition class took time work on.

Thankfully I got the due date incorrect for the contest, giving me an extra week to work on it. I’ve come to the realization that the game will have to use some prefab props to get it done in time, however, the prefabs will still have to the textures repainted to match the game’s style.

Armadilo Barbarian Sketch (Daily Monster: 06 out of 30)

Daily-Monster-06---ardvark-barbarian

The daily monster painting has been a two edged sword. It’s given me the motivation to paint and explore but because of time restraints I do not have time to fully research material for my subjects. This means the anatomy and potential variations suffer. I will try to figure something out. For example I love the face but the clothing is very plain because I had time to skech armadillos but not any time to research clothing. I might lengthen the project to give me a extra day to do some research and prelims for each character.

Portrait of Booker Dewitt (Bioshock Infinite)

Booker dewitt hero bioshock infinite portrait fictional character

Portrait of the fictional Character Booker Dewitt, the protagonist of Bioshock Infinite. I haven’t played the game yet and the only two decent references I could find was the box art and a concept image. Wanted to draw Booker at a different angle and different lighting, since it has little benefit for me to just copy someone’s painting. It was a more difficult painting aft first until I found the official concept art . Booker looks very anime-ish in the concept art, I attempted to render him more realistically in my painting.

This weeks portrait theme will be fictional characters in video games.
