I was commissioned to paint this shark character. It was fun.
Update: Decided to add the fangs after all. Found the area between the fills and the edge of the dragon’s mouth too empty, added more horns in that area. The snout was too long, shortened it.
It’s been a bad day. I had to rush my grampa to the ER. He is doing OK right now. It’s wasn’t fun. I played too much Super Hexagon in the waiting room, trying keep calm. I now can close my eyes and see imprints of a hexagon and walls. I needed a new icon. And of course it’s a dragon (heaven forbid if I ever use a gryphon icon like I originally intended to for this blog) I tried using a image of a incomplete 3d model I was working on, but it just didn’t scale right. I drew this for my daily painting quota as well. I should have drew some fangs coming out. oh well, a missed opportunity. Painted from scratch from my imagination ( I should have used a ref of a lizard of something) using Photoshop with a wacom graphic’s tablet. NOTE: This icon is solely for my blog and social media sites.
Portrait my character Chris the dragon, a character that is stuck in my head and refuses to die. This portrait was a experiment to see if I blend the painterly look with halftones,I think it might of worked. I’m happy that I understand lighting now, and I no longer guess when shading. After I finish Becky Wisdom’s portrait tomorrow, next weeks portrait theme will be ‘human faces that have been exaggerated but still look realistic’. Right now I feel frustrated with my art. I have been drawing for the last 6 months learning a more realistic style that concept artist and some illustrators use. When I visit the galleries of more polished and advanced artists and I know the steps and techniques that they used instantly when i look at their images, yet I feel I myself cannot produce something at that nature yet. I will just keep trying to improve. that’s all I can do.

Update: Modified the avatar to appear more ‘dragony’ and less anthropomorphic. Didn’t feel like double posting.
Yesterday, I decided to create a new avatar image. The character I often use as a avatar is Dean the Dragon, a original character of mine. Originally it was just going to be a simple cartoonly color drawing. But when I finished it, I felt that I returned to my old ways and bad habits of using symbols instead of using form and value. So i converted it to a value painting. A color value painting. Granted it could be popped out more and I missed a highlight on the ear, but it came out rather well for the amount of time I spent on him and since it wont be bigger then 128 pixels on most sites, it should work well.

My avatar for all my online social needs. His name is Dean. He is part of a semi daily comic strip I will be posting sometime around February. consider this a seek preview. I will upload more art related to the project as soon as it develops. I will post the comics semi daily on superdefective.com and weekly (all comics for the week on one post) here on Maugryph.com to keep my blog more tidy art/project centric.
