Coffee Spider Bot 3d Model WIP

coffeebotmodelwip

Here is the 3d model I made, using a NURBs based modeler called Rhino 5. The coffee spider robot is almost ready to serve its brew to the masses.

I’ve been a polygon modeler and have done very little with NURBs ( I would use them mostly for lofts and then convert them to polygons). They feel so foreign to me. After 5 hours of figuring this stuff out, I was able to assemble this 3d model.  If this was a poly model, it would be twice as detailed but I’m required to use NURBs for this assignment so I’m feeling a little crippled right at the moment. I’m required to use Rhino for this project so I have no choice. I have no doubt that Rhino is a powerful tool, I just don’t know how to do everything with it.

The spider bot should make a fine sculpture when it is 3d printed.

Monster Revised (Leviathan Game)

scorpian monster with claws and death

Update: After inserting the monster into the game, he was a bit too hard to see, so I went back to his purple coloring.

If you like to rotate this 3d model at all angles, you can view it on p3d.in : https://p3d.in/Cv7rb

I have revised the monster a third time. When inserting the monster into the game, the bright colors didn’t match the atmosphere of the game. I added some more clamps and gave him a poisonous stinger. This is the benefit of modular design. It took only an hour and a half to implement these changes. The only disadvantage of modular design is hiding the seams where the polygons connect. That’s where using a singular mesh has it’s advantage, but just try to add more polygons to a mesh that has already has uvs. It’s a nightmare.

The Monster – Leviathan (Finished Painting)

monster concept artwork

I finally finished the painting. About 7 hours of work. For time sake when creating the model, I should make the character symmetrical so the tentacle hands where replaced with claws. I feel this is one of my best concept paintings so for.  It’s going to be fun sculpting the model. Since this is the only character in the game, more time can be spent on him.

He will only need 2 animations

Daily Paint 36 – Fire Turtle for Animation Project

daily-paint-36

I am experimenting with effects in Adobe After Effects with no third party plug ins. For one of my experiments, was to make fire come out of the turtle’s mouth. I can hear you say “Why didn’t you use a dragon?”. The reason is that I’ve already did an animation with a dragon in it. Need to spice things up a bit.

Character Sheet for 3d Modeling Creature

character-sheet

Before I stared using character sheets in my modeling I would just have the ref on the side and try to ‘eye’ it. What was I thinking?!! This Time I took extra care to make a accurate character sheet. I then put each view on its own plane. Character sheet is the most useful tool on planet earth. I will never create a full model without one.

I finally thought up a name. The Impaler.

Monster Failure (Daily Doodle)

monster-10-16

A monster doodle that I dilly dallied too long with. I didn’t get nearly as far as I hoped. because of this I didn’t get to work on the values, so it looks flat 😦 The design reminds me of something  that would fit in Shadow of the Colossus. I’m disappointed with it but feel I learned something so I’m happy.

Domestic Creature ( Daily Doodle 16)

daily-doodle-16---monster-v2

Finally a creature that doesn’t remotely resemble a dragon. It looks more like the offspring of a raptor and a alpaca. I will continue my daily doodle project but I need to return to comps and values instead of design. Before I create another creature, I need to spend a fair amount of time doing research.. I cant do that with a daily doodle at this time. I need to break the ‘dragon curse’ that has infected my drawings. I need to explore new things and take the time to research it.  It’s my greatest weakness as a artist jumping into a painting too early. Its fine to be spontaneous when I’m sketching but not with a painting. I need to plan out what I need to do as a artist for the to improve my portfolio so I can get a job in this business.  I spent about a hour and 15 minutes on this doodle.

Creature Feature 1- Nectoar

creature concept art test speedy monster eat hole shark dragagon

The story of the Nectoar : the nectoar is a stone creature that lives in the abandoned mountains. It is said that it’s voice could crush rock miles a way and that it’s stare could turn a person to stone! it has quick strong legs that can catch up to any thing in a instant! It’s thick helmet shaped head protects the brain. it’s only weak spot is it’s fleshly red underbelly and it is the only way you can slay a nectoar. It has a sensitive pod above it’s head it uses as a third eye.

After watching a very motivating video on creativity (I will search for link when I can). It made a point that stuck with me. If you want to do something, you must simply do it, sounds simple right? So why doesn’t it happen? There are some that want to be writers but they never write due to fears and other hangups. But a writer does one thing every day without letup…. they write! So if you want to be a writer, you must write! Doesn’t matter how good or bad your are, if you want to be something, you MUST be it. Every day. Without letup. People like to use the popular excuse ‘I have no talent to do that’. Talent is overrated. Hard work and passion for you subject gets you places. NOT talent. Some skills might take years to learn well, but if it is your passion, make yourself dredge through it! The more you do something the better you become at it. The more you love it.

I have done this with being a artist, every day I draw, paint, and teach myself. I still have a ways to go (what artist doesn’t?), but it doesn’t matter, it is my passion to draw and paint. In just the last 4 months you can see a clear improvement in my skills. However I realized if i want to become a concept artist.. shouldn’t I create concept art? I draw allot of dragons, critters and still life paintings but very few designs. I’ve decided that along with my still life project I should create a critter a day. No excuses. I started creating creatures four days ago, this is the first design that is not too shabby. I write a short story about a creature and them paint it. Unlike my Still life paintings I will not upload every creature I create because..frankly most suck right now :D. I also do some quick daily storyboards as well of story ideas the pass through my reptilian brain. I now set aside 2 hours a day for studies, its called my Art block.

I spent 2 hours on this painting.
