Coffee Spider Bot 3d Model WIP

Here is the 3d model I made, using a NURBs based modeler called Rhino 5. The coffee spider robot is almost ready to serve its brew to the masses.

I’ve been a polygon modeler and have done very little with NURBs ( I would use them mostly for lofts and then convert them to polygons). They feel so foreign to me. After 5 hours of figuring this stuff out, I was able to assemble this 3d model.  If this was a poly model, it would be twice as detailed but I’m required to use NURBs for this assignment so I’m feeling a little crippled right at the moment. I’m required to use Rhino for this project so I have no choice. I have no doubt that Rhino is a powerful tool, I just don’t know how to do everything with it.

The spider bot should make a fine sculpture when it is 3d printed.

Update: After inserting the monster into the game, he was a bit too hard to see, so I went back to his purple coloring.

I have revised the monster a third time. When inserting the monster into the game, the bright colors didn’t match the atmosphere of the game. I added some more clamps and gave him a poisonous stinger. This is the benefit of modular design. It took only an hour and a half to implement these changes. The only disadvantage of modular design is hiding the seams where the polygons connect. That’s where using a singular mesh has it’s advantage, but just try to add more polygons to a mesh that has already has uvs. It’s a nightmare.

The Monster – Leviathan (Finished Painting)

I finally finished the painting. About 7 hours of work. For time sake when creating the model, I should make the character symmetrical so the tentacle hands where replaced with claws. I feel this is one of my best concept paintings so for.  It’s going to be fun sculpting the model. Since this is the only character in the game, more time can be spent on him.

Daily Paint 36 – Fire Turtle for Animation Project

I am experimenting with effects in Adobe After Effects with no third party plug ins. For one of my experiments, was to make fire come out of the turtle’s mouth. I can hear you say “Why didn’t you use a dragon?”. The reason is that I’ve already did an animation with a dragon in it. Need to spice things up a bit.

Character Sheet for 3d Modeling Creature

Before I stared using character sheets in my modeling I would just have the ref on the side and try to ‘eye’ it. What was I thinking?!! This Time I took extra care to make a accurate character sheet. I then put each view on its own plane. Character sheet is the most useful tool on planet earth. I will never create a full model without one.

I finally thought up a name. The Impaler.
