T-Rex with Robotic Limbs (D18)

cyborg-dino-doodle

A T-rex with firey feathers and robotic appendages. Nothing is more epic.

Painting in mass instead of line has really helped me loosen up. My mass sketches look better then my line sketchs. I think it’s because I can focus more on the shapes then the contours. I need to keep pushing myself to improve.

Still Life 10 – Glue Bottle in MS Paint

still life in ms paint

Trying to get out of my comfort zone. I had this glue bottle on my desk and decided to paint a still life of it. I asked myself “What is the most uncomfortable way to paint this thing? I know! MS Paint with only the pencil tool and the default pallet!” MS paint has no wacom sensitivity or transparency and a stupid loading circle would show up every time I pressed down onto the tablet. There are some new brushes available but they are a joke and have no control options. when I was a kid i used to make pixel art with it because it has decent zooming tools. you can still make some great work with it if you are patient (I’m not). What is disappointing about ver 6.1 is that the halftone patterns are gone. it would of helped allot with this painting to able to use halftone gradients. It’s amazing how MS Paint is still the dinosaur of paint apps after all this time. 25 minutes.

Daily Painting No 86. – Raptor WIP 3

raptor-vs-solders3

I did some more compositional changes and less painting for this round. I still need to clean it up a bit and get it more balanced. This was Monday’s DP. Today’s DP will be uploaded tonight and will be a original painting because the wacom that I take traveling with me is not working. I have to use my iPad. *chills go down my spine* Heaven help me!  Like I said in my previous post after the 100th painting I will be doing a 100 still life paintings and portraits for a hundred days. I will spend at least 30 minutes on each painting but no more then 2 hours. But don’t worry the still life paintings will NOT be boring things like vases and flowers. It will be of awesome things like Dinosaurs, Sharks and Robots (I use allot of toys in my still life paintings, it gives a adult like me a excuse to play with them). My still life will probably only be of one subject due to time constraints.

Daily Painting No.66- Best friends forever (Finished)

dino and horse t rex and pony allosaurus friends best friends forever

My first color still life is complete. I could (and probably should in the future) push the refinement of this painting more, but I am tired of painting it at the moment. I have found from my experience in painting, the only brushes you need for 90% of your painting is the soft round and the hard round brush. You only need other brushes for FX and repetitive shapes. My focus was color harmony. I tied the red all over the painting to make it consistent. Time Spent: A little less then four hours. Painted from scratch in Photoshop using a wacom tablet. I will be painting some quicker still life paintings in the future of rocks and shiny things.

Daily Painting No.62 – Best Friends Forever (Part 1)

Horse study with dinosaur dinosaur rider art artwork still life painting

My first COLOR still life painting. It wasn’t as scary as I’d thought it would be. I used my pony and allosaurus toys as a reference. I wanted to include a simple geometric shape as well but I had none with color (because I sprayed white paint over them) . I will go hunting in Goodwill for some. I learned a ton from this painting. First of all color is deceiving. To set up my palette, I did a little game. I took a photo of my still life and loaded it into Photoshop and placed it on my left monitor. I then set up a blank canvas, and placed it on my right. I then guess which colors where correct and placed them on my canvas like a swatch, then i would used the eyedropper tool on the color in the photo I was guessing to see how accurate I was. I would then guess again if it was too far off. That’s how I made my pallet. Because of this I can ‘see’ color a bit more clearly. I discovered that there was really no black color anywhere in the image. The shadow areas actually had a lot of brownish red in them due to bounce lighting. This painting is unfinished and will be completed on Friday. So Far I have spent 1 hour and twenty minutes on it. Painted from scratch using a Wacom tablet.

Daily Painting No.60 – Allosaurus in a Jar (Compleated Painting)

dino allosaurus t-res in jar captured scaly dragon scary

After a little under 5 hours, I have finally finished this painting. My black and white still life project is completed.  For one month I painted 12 still life paintings. I clocked in a total 22 hour painting these. I my goal was ten still life paintings in one month, I went two beyond my quota :). I felt I have jumped a substantial hurdle in my painting, and that was details and refinement. I will continue to paint a still life or two a week to keep the skills I’ve learned sharp and with hopes that I will learn even more. Let me know what you think of the final painting. Any comments and critiques are welcome. Thank you for bearing with me for the last 4 days with this painting. I have a painting to put in my portfolio.

Here is a picture of the progress I made to paint this:
