Daily Painting No.84 – Dragon Bust WIP

dragon badass portrait bust

I’ve been jumping around various unfinished paintings. I just can’t seem to focus all my energies on just one painting. I couldn’t seem to focus on anything today. It felt that I couldn’t get hardly anything done. I did get most of my assignments done, thankfully. Months ago, I painted a rough of this. I’ve been wanting to finish it for a while. I made a bunch of changes to the face and probably more to come. I will be alternating between this and three other unfinished paintings for this week. I am fast approaching my 100th day of painting daily. I am going to use those 15 days to finish my unfinished stuff. After the 100 day I will return to still life paintings and comp studies. I felt that the still life was the most useful too in learning how to paint.

Dragon Marker Speed Sketch with Demonstration Video

I was asked previously to show my sketching process. I decided to draw something that I draw often for practice and that is a dragon’s head. The demonstration is in real time and not sped up. I drew completely out of my imagination. The video runs for around 19-20 minutes and features some strange ambient music I created using Nodebeat. I am thinking of uploading some more demonstrations (perhaps my digital painting process if I ever can save up for FRAPS) and even some tutorials in the future.

The markers I used are : A Ultra Fine Sharpie, Sketch and Wide Copic markers W3, and a cool gray set of Spectrim Noir alcoholic markers.

Here is the finished sketch:

Dragon Face Value Painting WIP 2

Finally got back to working on this painting. Put more details into the scales, and rendered the mouth more.  I just need to do some more scale rendering and finish lighting it. Then I can start coloring. Painted in Photoshop. Time spent so far: About 3 hours. Let me know what you think so far.

Was watching Captain America: The first Avenger while painting this. The movie was pretty well made and had great production values. Chris Evans did a good job at portraying Steve Roger. The story was predicable but enjoyable nether the less. I was impressed however with the ending credit sequence, It was very interesting how they took the images from old U.S WW2 propaganda posters and animated them.

For the umpteenth time this month I have changed my avatar image. I sketched one I am finally happy with. I spent about a hour on this sketch of Chriss the Dragon  I also uploaded this to twitpic since twitter doesn’t have it’s own way to upload images. Hopefully I will stick with this avatar for a long long long time (or at least till tomorrow)

Update: Modified the avatar to appear more ‘dragony’ and less anthropomorphic.  Didn’t feel like double posting.

Yesterday, I decided to create a new avatar image. The character I often use as a avatar is Dean the Dragon, a original character of mine. Originally it was just going to be a simple cartoonly color drawing. But when I finished it, I felt that I returned to my old ways and bad habits of using symbols instead of using form and value. So i converted it to a value painting. A color value painting. Granted it could be popped out more and I missed a highlight on the ear, but it came out rather well for the amount of time I spent on him and since it wont be bigger then 128 pixels on most sites, it should work well.
