Color Study (Gerome – Arab Caravan)

gerome arab caravan study painting reproduc

This was a hard study. Not the actual painting BUT the fact that my laptop broke and I had to do most of this on a iPad. Thankfully I was able to finish this on a friend’s computer but he didn’t have Photoshop on it so I used a little paint program called myPaint. It took a little adapting as it didn’t have nearly the same amount of customization as Photoshop brushes. But I like it. myPaint has a infinite canvas, a strange thing for a raster painting program to have.

The coolest thing I have learned from these studies so far is that the painters never use pure black or white in the shadows or highlights. Instead the painter will use a complementary color or a grey tone. there will always be some bounce (or fill) light in the shadow that is the sky’s color or of  a close by object.

Daily Painting No.87- Dragon painted on a iPad (procreate)

20140129-220139.jpg

After a epic 2 hour struggle with painting this thing with my finger, and a neck cramp…I am done with it . Not that it is done as a finished painting, I’m just done. Period. For a finger painting it’s not terrible, I’m just would have done better using actual paint or a Wacom tablet.

Wyvern iPad sketch

Had some time to kill while waiting, so I drew a wyvern on my ipad using the app Procreate. I no longer have a stylus so the last couple ipad sketches I have used my finger. It’s strange drawing with your finger. Time spent 1hr. Software used: Procreate.

iPad Dragon sketch

20130518-002409.jpg

I’m out of town again. I have another massive headache. Strangely enough that didn’t stop me from drawing. I was having extreme artist’s block on what to draw so I sketched this dragon on my ipad. Lately I haven’t been painting on the computer but instead I’ve been sketching allot on paper. I have some animal figurines that I’ve been practicing on while watching movies on Netflix. I just haven’t been motivated to finish any paintings. I will try to motivate myself to draw a landscape tomarrow.

I used the app called procreate on my iPad to sketch this dragon.

Eastern Dragon 3D model

eastern dragon 3d model made with 123d creature snake like cat eye flying in ari 3d model cartoon

I discovered a awesome 3d sculpting program that actually works on a iPad. It’s called 123 creature. It’s the closest thing you will get to Zbrush on the iPad. Made by Autodesk, you know the AutoCAD and Sketchbook guys. The program has three modes. First is the skeleton mode which is similar to Zspheres and Blenders’s Form tool. After that you ‘bake’ your model to a polygons you can paint or sculpt it. My only complaint is that you can’t go very detailed in your sculpting so you will only can do so much in the app itself. But since you can export your model to OBJ, you can finish the model in your favorite 3d Software. The texture tools are excellent and will remind you of Mudbox’s painting tools.

Now back to the art. This is my third attempt to make a eastern style dragon (the other two dragons will not be posted due to the ugly sauce they produce) in 123d Creature and I ‘m happy how it turned out. I couldn’t give the dragon little teeth due to the limitations of the sculpting tools, I also had trouble coloring the tongue due to not being able to shrink the brush smaller. Pretty decent for my third attempt. I’m happy I was able to give it such a dynamic pose, my last couple dragons have just been standing bored out of their minds 😀

I spent about 3 to 4 hours on it.
