Self Portrait (for real this time)

self portrait male Caucasian German blond hair blue eyes human

I painted this in Artrage. I figured out how to used the watercolor brush but halfway decided I didn’t like the look of it so I switched back to the oil brush. There is some mistakes, I made the nose a bit too long. I choose yellow as the color to paint with, it made me look like vampire so after I was done painting it I opened it in Photoshop and adjusted the hue of the painting to have a more natural flesh tone. . And it looks more like a young version of my dad then me. I still liked how it came out though.

I was almost tempted to give this post the title ‘Self Portrait as a Alligator’ to continue my silliness from my last post but decided against it.

Speaking of silliness: Deviant Art has now jump started a new dating service called ‘Deviant Heart’: A dating service for artist. This has to be a April Fools joke.. I hope..

Portrait of a Roman wearing a Roman Helmet

portrait roman helmet feathers roman face shiny armor relections how to human character roman bird nose painting black and white

The theme for this week portraits will be helmets. I would like to get better at painting objects with reflective metallic surfaces, what better way then painting people wearing helmets? My reference for the painting comes from Wikimedia as usual, but I changed the face of the person, since I didn’t find a signed release with the photo, I decided to play it safe. This helmet was basically a giant distorted mirror that reflected the crowds and the feathers on it’s metallic surface. I knew i wouldn’t have time to draw all the reflections and details, so I did my best to just get the jest of the reflections.

Bioshock Infinite comes out tomorrow. I have to wait a few months for it to go down. Paying $60 for a game is not in my budget. C’est la vie.

Chris the Dragon Character Sheet for Comics

anthro dragon orange male persona dean dragon humaniod figure fursona artwork figure thing wearing hoodin for comic cartoon

After attempting to use my 3d characters for a comic strip, I found the look to be disappointing. It just doesn’t look good to put 3d art in a 2d medium and I just couldn’t get satisfactory results from the toon shaders in Carrara. It’s almost as strange looking as 2d characters in front of photos. So I have decide to use 3d as a reference tool for things such as perspective, buildings and complicated poses.

As for the actual Character Sketch I wanted to keep Chris consistent to the 3d model in proportions and looks. However the fins didn’t look well in 2d so I changed the fins to hair which strangely enough made him look like a eastern dragon.  I then gave him those silly whiskers eastern dragons have just for silliness. The rest is about the same. Next is Jed the Unicorn.

I will still be using the 3d characters for the animations. I just need to give Chris hair and whiskers, which shouldn’t be too hard.

This was one of the concept sketches I did for my Jackal with Crossbow painting. But I liked it so much I rendered it into a more finished painting. I was going to do a full figure painting like this before I changed it more to a portrait. For some odd reason I like the sketch better then the finished painting.

Self Portrait, Wearing Fedora, Behind Bright Light

self portrait maugryph male person figure with fedora

I painted my my own face today (on computer :D). It’s amazing but I never attempted  to paint a person wearing a hat. I attempted to draw a dragon wearing a hat (and yes it looked weird) but not a person. I rarely wear hats despite having three fedoras (gifts).  This time I painted over a paper texture in my attempts to make it look like a traditional pencil and watercolor sketch and then added a brown monotone. For fun I colored the eyes blue, which is my eye color.

Portrait, Male, Dynamic Lighting

self portrait dynamic lighting in darkness angry

To keep things fresh, this painting I tried a more dynamic lighting.  I took a picture of myself in a dark room with my webcam with the lighting source my computer monitor on the side. I used that as the reference for this painting. I found this painting to be frustrating. First I painted it on a black canvas. I’m used to painting on a grey canvas. Second, since most of the face was in darkness, I had trouble figuring out shape placement and in my shame had to repaint or move parts around. In the photo I look calm and mysterious. In my finished painting I feel I look menacing. I’m not happy with it. Spent around 45 minutes on it before retiring the painting.

Portrait Painting 8, Male, Heavy

I decided to start painting some of the torso as well as the head in my portraits. I think I would give a better all round personality to the subject. And rid of the head just floating in the air. Drew this with a massive headache, so I hope it is somewhat ok.

My fifth head value painting sketch. I use my own face as a reference this time but added a mustache and thick eyebrows. I try to keep them around a hour but I went over by one with this one.

Heroic Head

head portrait heroic head macho portrait digital artwork painting

More head practice. This time a value sketch of man’s head. I wanted him to look more heroic so I exaggerated some features like the cheekbones and the cleft chin yet I still wanted to look grounded in real life. I spent about 30 minutes on him more or less. I really enjoy painting in Photoshop since I have learned that you can change the opacity of the brush by pressing the numbers key a few months ago. I do my best to imitate gouache when painting and constantly change the opacity of the paint. Gouache (solid watercolors out of a tube with gum added) is what I used to paint in before I went digital. I tried acrylics in the past and disliked it and oils bothered my skin .  It kinda feels like gouache minus the mess and you get layers (unlike real gouache the will actually flakes off if you apply too much on top) 😀
