Trickster Coyote (Monster 17)

The trickster coyote is a popular character in Native American lore. I was going to adorn him with a more traditional Native American outfit, but I didn’t have time to research it. I probably made the face a bit too cartoony. I still like how this study came out.

Painted in Artrage, time spent: 2 1/2 hours. Note: I know he’s technically not a ‘monster’ BUT is it a creature of myth so is kinda of counts 😀

Update: After inserting the monster into the game, he was a bit too hard to see, so I went back to his purple coloring.

I have revised the monster a third time. When inserting the monster into the game, the bright colors didn’t match the atmosphere of the game. I added some more clamps and gave him a poisonous stinger. This is the benefit of modular design. It took only an hour and a half to implement these changes. The only disadvantage of modular design is hiding the seams where the polygons connect. That’s where using a singular mesh has it’s advantage, but just try to add more polygons to a mesh that has already has uvs. It’s a nightmare.

Monster Concept Revision

I Felt that the design needed more color. Since yellow is the complementary of violet,  adding a flame like texture might might make the design look cool. The chest was a little empty so a big eye was added.

The Monster – Leviathan (Finished Painting)

I finally finished the painting. About 7 hours of work. For time sake when creating the model, I should make the character symmetrical so the tentacle hands where replaced with claws. I feel this is one of my best concept paintings so for.  It’s going to be fun sculpting the model. Since this is the only character in the game, more time can be spent on him.

I don’t know what dark side of my brain this abomination came from.

I was experimenting in mypaint, an open source paint app. I has a fun and quick, yet very hard to use, ‘modeling’ brush. I like the controlled randomness the brush has.

I think mypaint works great for sketching on the computer when a pen and pencil are not available.
