Wow. I forgot to crop it
This one feels rushed. I think I was getting overwhelmed with my new job at this time.
Today was a bad day. A bunch of little things happened.. and then my car broke down. I was stranded for a couple hours int he middle of nowhere before my father could come to my aid. Pack rats are most likely the cause. My dad helped me replaced the damaged hoses but there is still something wrong with the car.
While waiting for the tow truck, I painted this on my Android Tablet using Artflow. It is of ChipRom feeling as down as I am. For some reason I felt better after drawing this.
A painting sketch of my dragon Alex (I haven’t drawn him in a long time) I spent more time on it then I was expecting. I did a decent job with the wings but got stuck for a while with painting the muscles attaching the wing to the shoulder and the neck area. I think it came out alright but it would have been better to have some reference on hand instead of drawing out of my imagination. I used Artrage to paint this.
My monster for Sunday. I could push this even more if I could keep my eyes open… I have the night owl curse,. I skipped doing monsters on Friday and Saturday. There just wasn’t enought time to paint due to the plans I had this weekend. Starting this week, I will work on a monster for two days instead of one. The first day will be research, prelims, and sketches (which will be uploaded). The second day will be the actual painting.
I pulled all the stops for this drawing. After using graphite and charcoal for months, I returned to my old love : Ink. I went though 50 thumbnail sketches. I made studies of eel anatomy, fish, boats, ocean waves, etc. I spent about 5 hours on the research side (thumbnails and studies) and about 10 hours rendering this with Micron Pens, Sharpies, and Copic markers. I avoided realism and aimed to make a narrative illustration you would see in a children’s book. It’s surprisingly difficult to render waves with ink. I used many visual tricks to force your eye to stare at the envelope (focal) in the middle. I feel my drawing and comp classes are starting to pay off.
Let me know what you think. I would to hear what you think is the narrative for this drawing.
Ink and marker on Bristol Board. 24×16. Time Spent :4-5 hours on research/studies, 8-10 hours on rendering the drawing.
