Daily Painting No.28 – Crying Dragon

sad dragon crying dragon

A dragon painting. The dragon is sad for a reason. I’ve been struggling with my paintings as of late. It doesn’t help that I painted the monstrosity of yesterday painting. And a illustration I worked hard on was declined by a art group. I ponder why I keep doing this. I just want to give up. The problem is that I cant stop drawing or painting as it has become a ingrained habit. I have been drawing off an on since I was a child.  I made the mistake years ago to stop studying to improve myself and instead do comics and toons but it never was satisfactory to me. Last year in September I decide I was going to start being a artist again, and about six months ago I started to ‘retrain’ myself as there was many things I forgot, embarrassing some foundational skills. Now I am in limbo.  I feel am not quite a Professional, I still feel like a amateur even though I have been paid for my work. There are things I need improving in yet I don’t know how to proceed. (Update: I requested a critique, so I hope it will give me clarity on what I need to work on)

50 minutes: photoshop

So for the next few months, my daily paintings will be mostly studies. Although I will toss in a dragon here and there and also continue to work on  a few illustrations, but I need to improve my skills in general. So What I am planing to do is this. the first couple weeks will be painting still life paintings  then after that I will through in a still life in once or twice a week. then I will rotate the studies between animals, portraits and landscapes. Most of this is what I been doing, just not out of my head. I will also make studies (called copies) of masters, and studies of contemporary artists to attempt to understand what makes them tick.

A different dragon – ipad drawing

I been drawing quite a bit of dragons that are more like wild animals,I wanted to take a shot at drawing one that was mire of a ‘person’ and have a personality yet still resembled the fire breathing monster we all know and love. Maybe this dragon was once a man and is now struggling with is new body, or perhaps is a domestic dragon that is kind to humans and is like a loyal pet to them. I wanted to try this with out resorting to anthropomorphism. Here is the fished drawing. I struggled with this one, changing various features, over and over. Im not quite sure if i like this drawing or not. Painted in Procreate

Chris the Dragon bust

I’ve been out of town for a few days on vacation so i haven’t been working on any new pieces. I have been sketching and doodling before I went to sleep. One sketch is that of portrait of my dragon character Chris on my iPad using Procreate. I liked how it came out, thought I would share it with you.

Chris the Dragon Finished 3D Model + Scene Lighting and Animation Test

smiling anthro 3d dragon cartoon model character 3d humanoid

Chris the dragon is finally finished. I fixed the problem areas in the last model, redesigned the feet and legs, fixed some minor glitches in the hoodie, remodeled the hip area to be more dragon-like, repaired some minor glitches in the face but most importantly painted the textures on him. I took my time on the textures, I wanted a balance between cartoon and realism. This is probably the best 3d character I have completed so far. 3d modeling is a lot of work but you can do alot of experiments and the ability give Chris any pose and expression is so worth it. I did some test renders of Chris in his office. I also did a test animation of him walking around the room. Now all that needs to be finished is Jed the Unicorn and I will be ready to go.

Model made in Carrara, Hexagon, and Daz Studio. Textures painted in Carrara. Total Time Spent on this model: 30 hours.
