Soldier (TF2) -He will eat you.. (Daily Doodle/Painting/Whatever)

Painis Cupcake art tf2 i will eat you

Its been a year since I played Team Fortress 2, I kind of miss it but not enough to play it 😛 However I finally caved in and downloaded Steam Film Maker so see how it compares to After Effects. It’s easier than I thought it would be and has similar features to After Effects. Setting up objects and props is a bit awkward but that’s OK. I did a test video. I might upload it later.

This portrait is based on a in joke in the TF2 community. It’s from a silly YouTube gmod video. If you don’t get it, don’t worry. It’s really is not worth understanding 😦

I didn’t make it to the blending and detail pass. oh well. My reference for this image was a stupid gmod video on youtube. 45 mins

I know if I want more exposure I need to do fan art of popular things. But when I do fan art I always fell like a sellout.

BLU Medic Portrait

The Medic is one of my favorite TF2 characters. I did a quick sketch of him last week. I felt that I needed to finish this portrait. I use it as my avatar in Deviant Art.

I also add a hot bounce light for fun. It’s amazing how adding another light source brings paintings to life.  Next portrait is that of Becky Wisdom, a kind lady who follows my blog and is brave enough to allow me to paint a portrait of her face.Photoshop

Portraits of the Medic, Scout, and Engineer (Team Fortress 2)

Not one, not two, but THREE portraits paintings for today. This time I did  preliminary sketches with crosshatching then painted over my sketches, and finally smudged the lines and colors together with the smudge tool. Created start to finish in Adobe Photoshop. Time Spent : Under 2 hours. These characters are in the game Team Fortress 2. I tried different expressions to keep things interesting. However I might have over done it with the Scout. The reason I’ve been into drawing TF2 characters lately is the fact that so many funny videos made with Source Filmmaker have appeared on YouTube.

The last two dozen or so portraits, I painted directly to the canvas at the get go. Painting directly to the canvas is both a exciting and frustrating endeavor due to the fact you are constantly checking for and fixing perspective errors but the final result usually looks much livelier because your not bound by line and your forced to think in value. However if you have done a decent preliminary sketch with the perspective worked out, it’s much quicker to paint but your are conformed a little by your line sketch.

Update: Added images with each character separate to this post. So I could display them correctly on my Portrait a Day Page

Portrait of The Heavy Weapons Guy

I was in the mood to paint a game character. What better character face to paint then the ‘sandvich’ loving Heavy from Team Fortress 2? My first portrait painting in the series that I experimented with two light sources, the main light from above, and a softer neon light on the right side. Since I made up the lighting, if you see anything I missed, ex a shadow or highlight, let me know. In the future I will paint the remaining eight characters. I used to play TF2 before it was invaded with silly hats. speaking of silly hats..

I didn’t use a single photo ref this time for the heavy but just typed “heavy weapons guy’ in Google Images (gasp) and looked at the bunch of thumbnails to get a idea how he looked. I made up the pose and lighting for this painting entirely by myself and kept it somewhat simple.

Update: Fixed eyes

I painted it in Artrage 4Time Spent: A little over a hour
