QuickHorror Key Art

Quickhorror key art 10 flattened crop3

Here is the key art that I did for QuickHorror. It will be used at a promotional image for the beta/prototype distribution. I want to give a dark feel. I really wanted to paint the entire monster in the painting but then it take some mystery out of the game. The monster in the game is rendered in a way that you cant get a clear shot of it. I will release a trailer tomorrow, and a press release on Wednesday.

I’m hoping I can upload the game to IndieDB, GameJolt, an another indie game server tonight. It will only have the procedural generated levels but that alone should give a player hours of game play. If enough people like the game, I will Kickstart it. I’m excited and terrified. I’ve never promoted my games before.

Character 3 (Wip) part 2

Still working on this. It’s been hard to focus the last couple days. I will attempt to finish it tomorrow.

Note to self: starting with a big brush and after every pass shrinking the brush size by half a very effective method. Last brush size is 10

Character 2 – Allana Warrior

Didn’t get quite as far as I hoped. I got distracted by ‘Sir, You Are Being Hunted’ a awesome indie stealth game the game review critics hate. I stopped relying on movie and game critics a year ago because most don’t have a clue what they are talking about or are extremely biased. Even worse the people who comment on the reviews reaffirms the ‘Ash Conformity Experiment‘.

Before I went on that random tangent, I really enjoyed painting this. I stays true to my reference and didn’t deviate into my own design. After a few more I think I will be ready to be more creative. The reference photo I based my drawing on is by faestock. The model is Allana, my drawing doesn’t do her justice. 2 1/2 hours

About the Character Every Day Projects

I will be frank, my costume designs need some focus, and I’m extremely bored with drawing stationary poses. So I decided to practice every day a character design. I found plenty of free stock images on Deviant Art provided by some very generous photographers.

I will be using these as reference when I draw. Sometimes I will do my best to copy that image, sometimes I will use the photos as a springboard for my own designs yet keeping some elements that where in the original, and sometimes I will just use the model’s pose/gesture and abandon every thing else.

What I pick depends on my confidence and my mood. A majority of the characters will be drawn using a drawing tablet similar to a cintiq. If I get brave I might use oils for some characters later in the game.

I will spend two days on each character. The amount of time spent on them will depend on my schedule and how bored I get with the painting. So every two days (excluding weekends)

Here is the first character. It wont win any awards but its a good start. This is a steampunk lady. The ref photo I based my drawing on is by Jagged Eye at deviant art. 2 hours. I will put a link when I find it again. Crits welcome.

Concept Art – Update to Alex Harkenstone and Derric Skycaster

After a day or so, I need to review my paintings to see if there are any adjustments and fixes needed. My two concept art paintings where a bit over saturated and some parts where still a little rough. Alex needed more color in her cheeks. I also experimented with a rim lighting to attempt to make the forms more readable in the shadows. As for my draco Derric, I found that there wasn’t enough interest in his face so I added more details to try to push the design. I also finished his feet. I have not yet designed a outfit I am pleased with, so he remains in a loincloth for now. I did color adjustments in both paintings. I fidget with color allot because I have not clue yet. I am relatively new in using color and am fighting my way though. I paid for a Color theory course at conceptart.com but haven’t been able to watch it yet. I will take a break from Derric and start working on Asgaunt and Prof. Notch in the future.

6 hours on Alex. 8 hours on Derric. Painted in Photoshop using a wacom tablet. Any input is welcome.
